Dr. Jackal and Lily agreed with lady Elizabeth as they all made their way to the next place. They looked around and took in the scenery as they walked. It was a quaint little town and rather nice to visit. However they had no plans on living there due to a lack of many things such as stores for scientific tools, research for the good doctor and music for Lily.
Oslo was a city, not the size of London or Paris but still not as small as other places. Bustling wasn't exactly the word to describe it, but busy in sections and at certain times certainly. Big enough to have several stores. Oslo was most known, though, for the elaborate Arundan festivals. Reported to be some of the best, because of the number of Arundan's that lived in this country. The one country with more Arundan, than Norway, was likely Greece.
This was evident as they wandered down the street to the next store. Several Arundan were about. However, one of the other populations in Norway was Dwarfs. They apparently enjoyed it here and while most lived outside of the city - there were still those that choose to live here.
Elizabeth, Sung, Dr. Jackal and Lily walked past a group of about 5 Dwarves just mingling with each other. Elizabeth knew Lily had the ward on, but still would likely feel a twinge of something. Not enough to turn, but enough to want to move past the Dwarves quickly.
As they were walking past the dwarves Dr. Jackal looked at Lily who got a confused expression on her face as if she smelled something off. So to redirect her mind he would ask her questions about how she learned so much about baking and she would ask him about his survival skills. This long exchange of knowledge managed to keep Lily distracted for the most part along with Lady Elizabeth's wards.
Sasha stepped out of the Hunter Guild Hall and into the afternoon sunlight. Going from a dimly lit building with no windows to the outside blinded her for a moment as she squinted and put her hat back on. Not realizing she was close to the group's next location.
As they turned a corner, Elizabeth quickly spotted the hunter in front of them. She moved closer so she could get the other woman's attention without yelling in the middle of the street. "Miss Lagrave," Elizabeth said, seeing if Sasha heard her.
Sasha reacted rather quickly, turning to let Lady Elizabeth that she'd heard her and approached. "Fortunate to run into you." she said. "I found some information that might be interesting."
"Oh?" Elizabeth was interested in finding out the information. "Well, we are headed to the dry goods store if you would like to come along. Is this information something that can be discussed now or should we wait until we go back to the guest house?"
Sasha thought about the question for a moment. "I'm not sure." she said. "One aspect might be common knowledge but with hunters you can never be sure." she said not wanting to sound like hunters were unreliable sources of information. "They tend to only interact with other hunters in regards to information, and speak often too bluntly about things that would scare the common folk." Sasha said, "I will leave that to you. I can tell you now if you wish or at the guest house."
Elizabeth nodded, "In that case, it might be best to wait until we get to the guest house." She briefly paused. "In the meantime, we have a list to give to the dry goods merchant. Is there anything you can think of that should be included on the list?"
Sasha thought a moment. "Beeswax." she said. "It can be used to keep left overs during the trip." Sasha said, following along with the group.
Elizabeth nodded and added beeswax mentally to the list. The dry goods store, as suspected, wasn't large as it was one of about 10 in the city. Most of the items were kept in the back. Out front had a glass counter with candy, a few display items but not much else. Elizabeth spoke to the merchant for a few moments, not just to put in the order but to ask for anything else they might need. Dry good merchants tended to be honest, because they depended on repeat business. The merchant said he could get everything delivered to the guest house tomorrow. Except, he did have any peppermint oil. Extracts didn't work for repelling animals, so the oil was necessary. It was the merchant's wife, who was also the co-owner, that pointed the group to the apothecary.
That was their next stop, and the apothecary had a number of oils and other items. They got what was needed.
That left one more stop. "We need to stop at a book sellers." Elizabeth commented, after they left the apothecary.
While at the dry goods shop Lily gave into her weakness and purchased a god amount of sweets which the good doctor offered to carry for her. When Dr. Jackal asked her why she got so much, she told him sweets keep one's spirit upon depressing days and they could be snacked on during night watch. The good doctor smirked as he carried the canvas bag full of sweets over his shoulder. Since Lily had more money than she could ever spend she could be very generous, much like Lady Elizabeth. Then at the apothecary shop Lily purchased some Lavender oils since they were good for breathing when sleeping and cleaning clothes. The good doctor on the other hand asked Lily to purchase some pine oil for lighting a fire and cleaning the carts. Then they headed to the bookstore and planned to purchase some books on local plants, local animals and local recipes.
The book seller was a one story log building, it didn't actually look like much, from the outside and Elizabeth was a little concerned they wouldn't be able to find what they needed there.
However, that concern was quickly dispelled upon stepping through the door. Not only were the shelves loaded with various works, all in order of category, but, as they would discover there nooks and crannies, hideaways area of all sorts also loaded with volumes. A female Arundan stood behind the counter and bowed upon seeing Elizabeth. "Good day, how may I help you Lady..." She spoke perfect English, but with a Norwegian accent.
"Lady Elizabeth, and yes we need 10 field guides to include plants and animals. Specifically Norway or the northern country." The Eldren was sorry she hadn't taken along Vor, but she would tell the team researcher about this place, though it was possible he already knew.
"Yes, Lady Elizabeth." The Arundan book mistress said. "That will take me a few minutes. Feel free to look around. My name is Maja, if you need any help just ring this bell." Pointing to the cowbell on the counter.
Elizabeth found some books on the runic language some Dwarfs still use, and the dwarves' history and culture. She found a few extra maps of Norway and the area they were headed to. And tried to accommodate a decent selection of books just to read, but not too many, as books weighed down the cart. She then waited on the others.
Sasha browsed the shelves, eventually finding two books. Both on the same subject, though from vastly different sources. One much thicker one much thinner, both books were on local folklore, one in a more studied way, though conspiratorial, the other was in the style of Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. "Besides what I've been told about, I'd like to be prepared."
Dr. Jackal and Lily were just browsing the shelves of books out of curiosity. Then by chance Lily stopped and pulled a book off the shelf. She began looking at it and then scanned the pages as if she found something interesting. Dr. Jackal then stopped his random search to see what Lily found as he asked, "Did we find something interesting Ms. Lavigne?" Lily nodded and smiled at the good doctor as she replied, "Indeed. Its a local recipe book in English. It mentions all the local meat and vegetation in the area that can be used for cooking and baking. It even has pictures for references." Dr. Jackal looked at the price and saw it was a pricey book and that may be why it was not sold in the area. He replied, "Judging by the price it seems to be here for tourists with a lot of coin in their purse." Lily smirked as she said, "Indeed good Doctor. I seem to be the target customer." Lily then held the book close as she continued her search with the good doctor.
Once everyone reappeared at the front, Maja also appeared with the field guides, in English. Elizabeth had added a few books for Norwegian to English translation as well. She paid for what she needed to. And as soon as everyone was ready they stepped outside the bookshop to the sound of bells from a local church or temple - it was most likely a Vepo Zon temple. In areas that had a large population of Arundan, Vepo Zon had large temples to accommodate them. Always near the water, usually facing it with large windows which overlooked the seas. While they preferred to worship outside near the water, in any sort of city that wasn't a practical way to accommodate a large congregation. Also, the bells sounded beautiful and perfect, and were something the Vepo Zon prided themselves in. It rang out 4 times to indicate the 4th hour of the evening. The sun still held high in the sky, and Elizabeth hadn't realized it had gotten so late. "We should head back to the guest house." Dinner would be rapidly approaching by the time they arrived. "If there is any place else any of you need to go, before our trip north, let me know and it can be arranged."
Dr. Jackal smirked as he said, "Dinner time already? I won't deny I am famished. I am also curious about trying out the Lingonberries here. I hear they are known as cowberries which are small red berries that grow across Norway. They have an exotic taste and are high in phenolics. I hear they are very popular." Lily perked up as she replied, "Yes indeed they are. I made it a point to get some dried Lingonberries so we can use them as a snack or add them to our tea and desserts."
"I do wish they were in season, but dry are good as well." Elizabeth said, as a cab pulled up. Timing, she supposed. "Well, then shall we?" Gesturing towards the cab.
