Hitting the Books pt. 2
JP between Cindy, RedSword7, and LucianNepreen
Given the possible risks of field work she had described, Vor could only assume this would be a safer position, one he could find his niche in.
“I appreciate the chance to be of use and I must admit, this sounds more up my alley than being on the front lines. Thank you, Lady Elizabeth. Would there be anyone else joining in this task or will I be handling it by myself?”
"Mostly it would be yourself as the others have other tasks. I might be able to eventually task the new girl that is staying with us, Miss Lavigne, to help you but I can't make her a member of the Order quite yet."
Then again Elizabeth seemed to recall Lily was not keen on the kind of work that Vor would be doing.
"Myself and Mr. Sung might be able to help on occasion but it won't be often." Elizabeth explained. "The information you will gather will be of value to the team."
Elizabeth wasn't just saying that, as the information gathered was important.
"You mentioned you were trying to find out more information about the cult. I believe the rare archives might be useful. I can get you in there if you like." Elizabeth said, nodding towards the door that said "archives, rare."
Vor nodded for her to lead the way, appreciating the help.
“I must say, I rather like the sound of being on my own for the most part. Solitude lets me think.”
Elizabeth nodded in understanding. She turned to Sung, who was perusing the books about the lands most Europeans collectively called Asia. "Mr. Sung, I will be in the archives with Mr. Vor'Aster."
She led Vor to the the front desk. An Eldren who looked around Liz's age, with exceptionally blonde hair and seagreen eyes, was working behind the desk. "Bonjour, Lady Margaret."
"Greetings, Lady Elizabeth." Margaret's accent was ,surprisingly, very hard to pin down. It sounded almost French but not excatly, almost British but not excatly, possibly Swiss bit, once again, not excatly.
"English today, I see?" Elizabeth asked, which Margaret confirmed. "Very well, then. I would like you to meet Mr. Vor'Aster. He is a member of my team and have recently taken the job of researcher. I would like you to grant him permanent access to the archives. "
Margaret nodded, "Of couse," she opened a draw at her desk and pulled out a key. Held it saying a few words in Latin. Got up and handed the key to Vor. "The key will not work for anyone else, but I would ask you do your best not to lose it."
"Thank you, Lady Margaret." Elizabeth said. "We much catch up sometime."
"Oh, yes. Maybe the next time your at headquarters." Margaret said. "I will see you at the magic Guild's gala?"
"Of course,"Elizabeth said, giving a nod to the other Eldren.
If one could read body language and such things well they might get the distinct impression the pleasantries exchanged were for show. It wasn't that the two disliked each other, more the impression they didn't know each as well as perhaps others might.
Elizabeth led Vor to the doors were the archives lay behind. She pulled put her own key and uses it to open the door. "The door is warded, I can not use my magic to open it. It is actually one of the few doors on the property that has wards on it."
The door led to a small hallway, at the end of the hallway was an opening which lead to a large opened room with books aligned on shelves.
The books were clearly old, but in fairly decent condition. Elizabeth went over to a small desk and opened a draw. She pulled out two set of cloth gloves. One a bit larger than the other, she held the larger pair out for Vor. "Please put these on. As you probably know the books in here are old and somewhat delicate."
She put her own gloves on. "Now, I would guess their might be something in the section on religions." She paused. "What languages do you know?"
Placing the gloves over his own, he couldn't hold back the urge to test his fingers. With two layers on, he had no sense of touch whatsoever and it amused him. He continued to test the odd sensation as he responded.
"I am fluent in many northern languages, as well as several from the western nations. Greek and Latin of course. My grasp on French has improved to the point that I can grasp a books content with relative ease."
Finally satisfied with the gloves, Vor returned to a more thoughtful look.
"I would want to try looking through the histories as well, see what kind of affect might have been recorded by their presence and any kind of affiliations they might have had, or still have."
Elizabeth nodded, "Being the cult originated in Greece, you likely want to go through those books and see if any might work. I unfortunately cannot help you with that as I do not know Greek."
There were a few on odd religions written in French, a few historical text written in Latin, None of them had much about the Children of the Sea.
If Vor how ever did look in the religion and the historical section both contained one book each in Greek which contained information about the cult.
Sung paused thinking staring at Elizabeth He was worried about what she was going to do next. "Lady Elizabeth, what are you going to do while we are here?" asked Sung.
Elizabeth handed a pair of gloves to Sung as well. Anything in this section needed to be handled with gloves. "Well, Mr. Sung sew that door over there. She pointed to a small door that almost looked like it led to a closest. "That is the magic section. I am going there and see if there is any thing about binding spells I might be unaware of. I am aware the magic guild would have more information but there might be some old text that has additional information." She paused, "Though I suppose you and I should not stay long, we should find the rest of the team and, let us say, check on them."
She then turned to Vor. "Mr. Vor'Aster, I am uncertain if you have been told but the Baron is having a lunch especially for our team. In Cafe number two, at 12:30."
“We were informed after the tour. It cuts in on time I would rather use for researching.”
He wasn’t sure if the Baron would have ears, but knew enough nobles to know they often had fragile egos. The desire to joke at his expense was immense though, especially after his judgmental introduction. He could not hold back his distaste in his response though, though kept his demeanor respectful.
“I will be sure to not keep our host waiting. I would imagine his Lordships patience is not as great as his generosity.”
"If it helps any the Baron will not be attending the lunch. And now that you have your own key, to this section, you may come back here when you choose. Actually, Miss Ipsum will be working on her designs here so she will be commuting to and from my home daily. I would think you could ride with her, if you chose." Elizabeth explained.
Vor nodded, both in approval to the idea of riding with the expressive gnome and to not having to suffer the Baron. He had once prayed for the elite, hoping they would realize they were all drops in the same river, but had long ago seen that avarice was all consuming to most land walkers. He had even witnessed the sickness grip his own kind that were drawn into the cultures. Even if he condemned the individuals, he still prayed for Metira to show mercy on them in their next reincarnation.
He could still see the humble camaraderie in Miss Ipsum, something he saw more of in gnomes than other races. It was an odd, but encouraging thing to see and he hoped an arrangement could be made. He saw the planned lunch as a good time to bring it up.
“I thank you for your help, Lady Elizabeth. I certainly hope the resources here are a boon.”
Not wanting to waste more time, he bowed to her and Sung and made his way towards the religions, believing it to be the easier source.
