Did Anything Matter?

The comment stirred the ex-Arbiter’s conflicted emotions.
“Right or wrong, the Pillars shaped me. They were the conduit I poured my entire youth into. Who am I without the Gods?“
Gonyaul usually would have listened and shown understanding. Instead he quipped back without hesitating. A little more vigor in his voice, partially a mixture of some of his unresolved issues with her.
“You would be who you becoming. I no think you know yet what you want to become, because keep looking backwards for identity. Hard walk forward when focus is back.”
Alexis shrugged.
“I get it.”
In a way, she felt, the Pillar’s teachings might be as important to Voah as her father’s values had been to her.
“Doesn’t mean you have your don’t have your own head on your shoulder to think and consider.”
That was something she herself at times battled with. But she had begun to accept she would never be her father. Maybe not even what he hoped her to be. In the end she could just be, well,… her.
“But, Gonyaul.”
She calmly addressed her friend.
“It is just as hard to find your way forward, if you forget where you are coming from.”
Tarmen spoke up as well. He had never been an overly religious man, but he had faith.
“Hard to look forward when the past looks to stab you. Like an old friend suddenly betrayin’ you, makin’ you question what you’ve done while they had your back.”
He looked towards the others not meeting their eyes. His voice had a hollow quality to it.
“Makes you question everythin’ you’ve done while they had your back. If any of it mattered.”
