Don't You Forget About Me
“New knots!” Vas echoed fishing around in his pocket for a pair of his old boot straps. “This one work good with more work bootstraps, fresh ones tend to slip so it won’t look as nice … So you gotta hold the ends here …” He started to explain, hand moving slowly so she could see. “ … keep it tight … take your time …” He emphasised and when he was done there was a knot that looked like a flower. “ … and you keep going till you use it all up and not you got a bootstrap knot necklace! Need me to show you again or you wana give it a go?”
“I wanna give it a go!” Serena said, making gimme hands. She’d watched him intently and was determined to have a pretty necklace to make the other Erinyes jealous.
Vas brimmed with pride handing the project over to Serena to try. “Go on then Rabbit.”
Serena worked diligently, following Vas’ instructions. “Over. Under…. And then…” she held up something that vaguely resembled his knott. “Like that?”
“Hmmm try again, it's a hard knot, see how it got a little loosse so the petal don’t look very even …” Vas explained. “ … consistency is key! Otherwise, it’ll look weird.”
“I’ll try again,” she agreed, going slower this time. With a little help, she had a decent-looking flower knot on the boot string.
“There ya go much better!” Vas praised. “And you keep on going and going till you get it to the length you want, just make sure there's a little bit at the end so you have a way to put it on.”
“I’m gonna work on it all night,” she told him. “But… what about you? You need a necklace too.”
“I got a necklace already.” Vas tsked fishing out his dog tags. “See?”
“Oh,” Serena said. “But how will you remember me?”
“How could I forget!” Vas said with smile.
“What if you find other Erinyes?” She asked.
“There are more?” Vas said with fake cluelessness. “Naw theres only one I like.”
“There’s more hellhounds, right? Maybe there’s more of us somewhere. You never know,” she said, working on another flower.
“If there are I don’t know about ‘em.” Vas admitted.
“You’re still the best Hellhound,” she told him. “Even if there was hundreds and hundreds of others.”
“Good to know I'm the best at something. You know, other than being totally unkillable.” Vas said smugly.
“You are made of some pretty tough stuff,” she agreed, finishing another flower. They were now easier, and looked more uniform.
“So are you, I think that's why we get along.” Vas nodded watching as her movement got smoother.
“I do throw a good shoe,” She said with a nod.
“That shit is laser guided.” Vas laughed. “Alright you work on that, I gotta see someone about some camping stuff.” He said holding out a fist to bump.
Serena giggled as she fist-bumped him back. “It’s gonna be great!” she said happily.
“Hell! I’ll catch you later Rabbit, behave. But if you can’t don’t get caught.” Vas cackled getting up and paused. “Maybe I am a bad influence … Nah …” He waved heading off to see a cook about camping stuff.
