Visions Of the Past

She barely registered Hunter’s words.

“Who am I? Who are you?” Hunter’s voice echoed, the sound muffled as if passing through the other side of a wall.

She turned to him, dizzy, everything was moving in slow motion. She took the sword from him and held it slightly aloft ins daze. Voah was absolutely devastated. The lies. The inhumanity. The evils of sorcery had to be stopped. But was the cost worth it?

“Who am I?” Hunter’s words whispered.

The Children of the Void… betrayed… slaughtered… man, woman... Her Holy Sword forged in the blood and bone of a child.

“And who are you?”

She sank to her knees with her head down, dropping the sword in front of her. Hunter could see the muscles in her neck tensing as gasping cries came in waves. She tried to compose herself. To breathe. One hand was grasping long tufts of grass from the plains, while the other lay upon her forehead as she shook her head in disbelief.

Who was she?

She picked up the blade and ran it across her forearm, not deep, just enough to draw blood.

Hunter reacted quickly, grabbing her arm, which healed immediately as if in response to her test.

A scream of rage and pain of compassion welled up and erupted from her throat, ripping the night air.

She knew now that their mouths did not speak like hers, The Pillars… The Silent Gods… unheard beyond their divine barrier. But they gave small miracles.

She felt inside that genocide was not their will. Was it?

Hunter was now kneeling before a very conflicted Voah. He was surprised when she cut her arm open and assumed she was committing suicide however he was shocked as he saw her arm heal. He wondered if this was a blessing from her Pillars or was she a witch? To many questions and no answers were offered. He had no idea what she saw but if was enough to make her crumble un the weight of it. As a result she let out a blood curdling scream. Her face looked confused and puzzled as Hunter quietly watched her trying to figure things out. Since he was still new to empathy he had no skill on consoling Voah during her time of need.

The stars she looked to were smeared by tears and she knelt there, her shoulders shuddering as she wept. A figure came into her periphery and knelt beside her. It was Hunter. Poor lost Hunter. He didn’t even know how to comfort a friend. What must he think of her now? Weak? She didn’t think so. Crazy maybe. She heard his words echoing in her mind.

‘…I struggle to empathize with others when they are struggling.’

She would have to teach him. Voah reached out her hand and just held it.

‘Who am I and who are you?’ More words that lingered in her mind. It made her think back on the rabbit’s response when she was trying to figure him out. ‘I Gonyaul.’

She chuckled and when she regained her composure, she spoke.

“You are Hunter, my Incus. And I am Voah... Arbiter of the Pillars.”

Hunter said, "I see. You were shaken up by your experience. Its not my place to ask you what you saw but if you need my input I am here. However we should get back to camp before any predators come after our provisions and horses. Can you walk or should I carry you like a Princess? Hunter gave Voah a half smirk at his bad joke.

She smiled in spite of herself. “I’m tempted to take that offer.” Then she stood and turned back to look at Omen’s fire.
“Gone.”

Looking back towards Omen's camp neither of you could see any signs of a fire or of drumming. It was as if the woman and her servants had disappeared into thin air. Making you wonder if she has truly been here at all.

Hunter looks back at where Omen's camp was and saw nothing. He spoke up, "Either we were consulting with a spiritual being or this was one bad dream."
