After it got dark, Voah and Hunter were alerted to drumming around a rather large bonfire in the distance. Hunter was concerned as he spoke up to Voah.
"Either this is a ceremony for the moon or a war party. Either way, we should be concerned.
"Yes... that is concerning... You don't suppose they can see our fire, do you?" said Voah as she let her horse eat a slice of root vegetable from her hand.
Hunter went silent and held up his hand as he listened and squinted out into the distance. It was clear that he was now in 'scout mode' and the answer to her question didn't matter. Regardless whether they had yet been seen or not, they would find out sooner or later and it was probably better to know exactly who and what they were dealing with before it was too late.
She whispered, "Right. Let's not wait around to find out."
At Voah words the drumming appeared to get louder and the fire in the distance brighter as if it's more than a bonfire but a beacon calling to them both.
Hunter quietly listened to the drumming get louder and the fire getting brighter. Then he whispered, “At this point we can join them or break camp and vanish into the darkness.
It was a mighty fire and the flames seemed to grow higher as they watched. Voah wondered what the source of the fire was. Such a large blaze seemed out of place for the plain was an open expanse where trees grew sparse and very far apart. She left the camp slowly and cautiously, drawn to the strange drumming, not realizing she was leaving Hunter standing there watching.
Hunter tugged at Voah as he muttered, “You know we stick out with the natives. Are you sure you want to go there?”
She turned as if waking from a dream.
"I...".
She looked to the fire and back, then decided on going. She picked up her scabbard and strapped it onto her waist.
"I'm just going to get close enough to see what it is. Foolish of me, maybe... you can stay here if you like."
Then she started again toward the beating and booming, slowly in case Hunter decided to follow.
Hunter sighed as he knew this was going to be troublesome. However since he was working for Voah now, his options were limited. Hopefully the native were the nice ones he met before. He followed Voah from about ten feet behind her.
The situation was very much like when the trading party had spotted the platforms on the plains. They did not investigate then, even though everyone wanted to. It wasn't her nature to be so bold with her investigations, neither was she one to wait around and let something catch her unawares. Besides, there was something pulling her. Something beyond the world. Was it the Pillars... or something else?
Hunter was worried Voah was getting in over hear head by heading to the bonfire full of drummers. The odds were not in their favor that this was going to end well. Hunter counted his arrows as he wondered if he had enough to fight his way out, but it would be a moot point if they were greatly outnumbered. Then he muttered, "It will be a miracle if we live through this. "
