Witches of Blood

“And the witches… that is something you and I need to discuss.”

Gonyaul nodded. “Perhaps they have person who looks after animals in town that know things?”

He was pleased she was showing caution about Alcuin. They just didn’t know the man well enough to have their trust fully invested.

“What discuss about witches? And you say blood magik, what is that like?” It sounded rather disgusting, but perhaps it was better than it sounded.

“What I mean is… we need to discuss OUR way of dealing with witches. You know my way… and I don’t fully understand how your way is possible or advisable.” Voah responded.

She took a breath and her eyes flicked around as if her mind was searching for the information and memory to recall.

“To answer your other question, blood magic is perhaps the most dangerous of all. It encompasses many things but specifically it deals with manipulating the very essence of life. This witch gave her blood to hatch the Skara and uttered spells for the dark robes to continue feeding them with their own blood. I witnessed her stave off a woman’s fatal wound so that she could continue fighting as some kind of thrall or vengeful revenant…”

Her eyes trailed off then, remembering more of the night that haunted her to this day.

“The V’roni Clan… the ones who tried to take my life… to rejuvenate their own… they cut me, Gonyaul. I was just a little girl... And they took my Maja from me…”

She had to stop there with the memory and move on to an older history. She recounted it as if it was being read from a text.

“At the battle of Murontomaga… the Sorcerer-King Torkaus… seeing the capital city of his kingdom sieged and with little hope to achieve victory against the Inquisition… killed his own family in sacrificial ritual to use their royal blood in his final spell...
No one knows the exact nature of what was unleashed that night… but everyone within the city died in one heartbeat...”

A pregnant silence followed.

Blood magik not only sounded disgusting, but per her account sounded problematic. He soaked up her words like a sponge. Gonyaul rarely had conversations of such magnitude and subject matter, so this experience was novel. He had so many questions, literally a child like response to each sentence she just said. He refrained, willing to save them for later to get to the main purpose.

“So you think you, I mean we, will come across more witches of blood?” Did that mean they would be actively pursuing them or just keeping their eyes open.

Voah was brought back from a haze of thoughts by Gonyaul’s question.

“She got away… I’m not saying I want to seek out all witches, but Arcadia seems to be full of surprises. How can I sit idle and let a witch like that join the fight against my people? I know that our side started this war but shouldn’t it be evenly matched in arms? Alexis, Tarmen, Wim, Master Nicolaus… if the army reaches Ostiarium… if I don’t do something, I can only hope that the Silent Flock can stop this witch as well as possible other witches and probably the Sorcerer priests of these Twin Gods…”

A look of worry came over her as if a great weight was pressing on her.
