Clearly, the boatman wanted some form of fare for the trip to Gra’akast but the two travelers were finding themselves pretty short handed still. The two looked at each other and began to go through their survival packs to find something that made sense to exchange and that they were willing to part with. The people of Desdem didn’t see much interest in the things they had offered last time.
Gonyaul went through his survival pack in a matter of seconds. He was used to not having many worldly possessions, in fact he rather preferred it. His tendency, if he did acquire money or things, was to save them until he could find someone in need and then gift them away. There current items though were desperately needed for survival and did not make sense to part with. He did have the jade comb that he was unwilling to part with unless forced.
If he were the boatman he would have offered transportation without thinking once about compensation. The opportunity to be generous would have been reward enough. Too bad few individuals he had met in his travels had a similar mindset.
Voah’s things were more extensive. And up till now she had been backing their entire venture with her resources. Gonyaul moved along side her and suggested the following options:
“We could try pearls. River goes to Fang lands on map. Perhaps he go back and forth and could use? If not, have this staff.”
The staff was exquisitely crafted and had ornate golden designs at the ends that tapered as they neared the center. He wouldn’t mind parting with it; however, it did come in handy and saved his life against the desert dog attack. Perhaps it would not yet be wise to lose it with all the uncertain dangers their future travels had in store. Plus, it was very useful as a walking stick, a clothes drying pole, dancing partner, among other less vital functions.
He whispered, “Bad case we say no and keep on foot.”
“Pearls first.” she agreed and held up one of their last two pearls pinched between her finger and thumb in offering to the boatman.
