Making friends..
The Brewmaster was waiting for Wim when he returned. As they walked to the Oak Cup, the Brewmaster asked a few questions about what Wim had done and saw that afternoon. Most of Wim’s responses got a nod as approval. At the accidental mention of Sorrum’s name there was a snort and a warning to stay away from him. As if his jaw was not enough of a reminder to this fact. Wim also kept the information about the knight possibly being connected to the Natives.
Wim finally asked, “What do you know about the natives?” Hoping that they might drink, which meant that the Brewmaster would know something.
The two of them walked to the Oak Cup to get dinner. They ate with little talking in the noisy tavern. The Brewmaster put some coins on the table and told the Serengeti file to send him home after the next drink. The next day was goin to be piping rocks back into the wall and cementing them in place. Something his place needed done to it as well. That would help with the dampness and the wind blowing through.
As the evening settled in, Wim found the card game and worked his way in as the dealer. He did not have coin to gamble and he needed the practice to keep his hands loose. The high point of the evening was throwing a hand of four aces to a young recruit that was getting teased by older men. Wim did not cheat much as he did not have a horse in the game. But he did know a thing about needing to have some pride.
During the game he listed to their talk, listening for information about Sir Zane and other interesting details about the town. Knowledge was power and Wim wanted to know. He also asked about Sorrum, inferring that the man was a trouble maker. He wanted to find an angle to leverage his book back. Tonight he was in the business of making “friends” and gathering information. Well, and trying to make life hell for the lumberjack while keeping deniability.
He made a point of talking to people and being friendly. We even did a couple sleight of hand trick to entertain some of the young ladies that came after the evening meal.
When his drink was done, he bid the crowd a peaceful night and headed home.
Morning came with a loud thump on his door. The smell of bacon, eggs, naresh bread moved him off the mat to the door. A basket sat there and he saw the Brewmaster walking back to prepare for the days work. Wim ate quickly and headed up to learn what he needed to do. His job was hauling rocks and lifting them into place. Eventually he was allowed to start setting them. It was like a puzzle, getting the right rock for the space, filling it with the cement, and getting it set.
During a break he entered the Brewery and did some searching. A beam had been placed to jack up the roof and allow some safety till the wall was rebuilt. Searching threw the building he found some casks that had not ruptured. It would give them something to sell at the festival. They also had an order to fill for Sir Zane two days later.
