Cuckoo

“Near noon,” she said, pouring herself a large mug of coffee. She had to rely on the ancient Swiss wall clock which they invariably forgot to wind by pulling a weighted pine cone. It was a gift from Bela - something she'd picked up in the Black Forest, not really a cuckoo clock per say because Mathias had found it annoying enough to take out the offending wooden bird one morning. Now every hour, without the chimes or little creature, it opened it's doors and out jutted a small wooden plank. It actually looked like it was sticking its tongue out, mocking them which added to its charm.

Digital clocks were pretty useless around Mathias, as were non warded electronics. He was relegated to carrying a yellow Nokia cell phone for communication, no smart phone, no tablets, no computers, a stark comparison to his twin.

“You can stay back here, I’m going to hitch the truck up and maybe head south.” Cyd advised.
