Mathias’s Archetype: Elementalist RushdownMathias blends the overwhelming aggression of a Rushdown fighter with the raw destructive power of an Elementalist, enhanced by alchemical tools and a brutal, no-holds-barred combat style. His defining traits include:
Tactics
Mathias’s preferred approach is to overwhelm his opponent with an aggressive barrage of fire magic and swift, relentless attacks. He aims to dominate the fight quickly, leveraging surprise and pressure to throw enemies off balance.
Elemental Prowess
As a fire mage, Mathias wields his magic with devastating force, turning the battlefield into his domain. His spells are both offensive weapons and tactical tools, designed to immobilize, disorient, or outright annihilate his enemies.
Resourceful Alchemist
Mathias incorporates alchemical tools—explosive potions, traps, and tactical enhancements—into his combat style, adding unpredictability to his relentless offense.
Overloaded Power
While his magical abilities are a devastating asset, they come with steep costs. Overuse risks burnout, physical pain, and debilitating consequences, forcing Mathias to weigh aggression against sustainability.
Unrelenting Force
When provoked or in high-stakes situations, Mathias’s darker tendencies emerge. His intensity and willingness to use brutal tactics make him a terrifying opponent, especially when he’s pushed to his limits.
Elemental Alignment: Fire
Mathias’s connection to fire is raw and primal, representing destruction, rebirth, and relentless energy. His magic is deeply tied to emotion and willpower, making him a powerhouse in battle but challenging to control in moments of duress.
Power/Magic:
The Hex
Mathias was born with a Hex, an unpredictable magical anomaly. While it grants him immense power, it also causes interference with modern technology and renders most advanced equipment unreliable around him. This Hex is both a curse and a defining feature of his existence
Tech Disruption
Anything relying on electronics, from computers to cars, is prone to failure in his presence. Devices may overheat, short-circuit, or outright explode. This forces Mathias to rely on mechanical tools, older weapons, and manual processes rather than the conveniences of modern life.
Isolation
The Hex makes Mathias feel disconnected from the modern world. He cannot enjoy its comforts, making his life lonelier and more challenging. His reliance on old-world techniques reinforces his reputation as a "relic" among other magic users.
Magical Amplification
The Hex acts as a double-edged sword—it enhances the intensity of his fire magic but at the cost of control. His spells burn hotter, last longer, and are more destructive than those of most mages.
Magic Style
Mathias’s magic is visceral and dominating, favoring brute force and destruction over finesse. His Hex amplifies this rawness, making him a terrifying force in battle but challenging to contain.
Core Attributes
Emotionally Driven: His spells gain potency from his emotional state, particularly anger, frustration, or desperation.
Rough and Rugged: Mathias’s style is old-school. He relies on ancient sigils, manual spellcasting, and deep knowledge of pre-modern magical techniques.
Unpredictable Power: His Hex can make even simple spells explode with force or fail spectacularly, adding an element of danger to his magic.
Costs and Consequences
Hexed: Overusing his magic can cause catastrophic failures or even disable his abilities temporarily.
Physical Tolls: Channeling magic leaves Mathias physically drained, overdrawing has severe side effects like magical backfire, exhaustion, or seizures.
Hex Interference: The presence of his Hex makes teamwork with technology-dependent allies a challenge. His mere proximity can disable weapons, vehicles, or communications.
Tools
Hex-Proof Shield Bracelet:
A sturdy, rune-inscribed bracelet worn on his left wrist, designed to protect Mathias from magical and physical attacks. The bracelet generates a shimmering, fiery barrier that absorbs incoming energy and physical blows, but its power is finite and needs time to recharge.
A gift from Cyd, this bracelet is one of the few tools that reliably works despite his Hex.
Infernal Focus Pendant:
A pendant carved from volcanic glass and set in an intricate iron frame, worn close to Mathias's heart.
This focus helps him channel and control his immense magical power, reducing the risk of overloading or losing control. The pendant absorbs excess magical energy during casting, acting as a stabilizer to prevent catastrophic burnout. It glows faintly when active, its light pulsing like a heartbeat.
Alchemist’s Jacket:
A rugged red leather jacket customized with dozens of hidden pockets and compartments on the inside, designed for carrying Mathias's spellcasting ingredients, tools, and handwritten notes. The jacket is enchanted to resist wear and tear, extreme heat, and most magical attacks. It functions as magical armor, creating a protective aura that dampens incoming damage from both physical and magical sources. While it doesn’t make him invincible, the enchantments significantly reduce the impact of blows, fire, and low-level curses, giving him an edge in close combat. Pockets hold vials of oils, powders, herbs, and metals used for rituals, as well as chalk and ink for sigil creation. The jacket itself feels like an extension of his old-school, practical approach to magic.
The enchantments also keep it lightweight and flexible, allowing him to move freely in a fight or during a high-stakes escape.
The Ember Grimoire:
A weathered and thick book bound in blackened leather, filled with ancient fire magic, Hex lore, and alchemical recipes. Its pages are enchanted to be fireproof and to reveal hidden text when Mathias channels energy into it.
The grimoire serves as both a guide and a journal, containing decades of notes from past mages, along with Mathias’s personal additions.
Glamour Ring
A discreet silver band etched with faint, looping runes that shimmer subtly under certain light.
Enchanted with a glamour spell, the ring conceals the dark mage scars on Mathias’s hands and arms, giving his skin the appearance of being unmarked.
The glamour isn’t just cosmetic—it also suppresses the visible flickering of embers beneath his skin when he channels magic, helping him blend into mundane society and avoid unwanted scrutiny. The ring draws a small but steady amount of energy from him to maintain the illusion. Overuse of magic or extreme exhaustion can temporarily disrupt the glamour, causing his true markings to show through. It’s not a perfect disguise; individuals sensitive to magic, or those skilled in dispelling charms, might notice subtle inconsistencies in the illusion. The ring is a practical tool for keeping the Veil intact and preventing panic or judgment from those unfamiliar with the nature of his scars.
Potions
Mathias always keeps a few potions handy usually as a last-ditch attack, means to escape, or sometimes targeted to a mission at hand.
Physical Appearance
Mathias is tall and lean, with a wiry frame. With wild rakishly styled red hair that barely kept in place and blue eyes. He has sharp features and an angular jawline giving him a predatory air. Both hands from the second finger joint up are black as if ink had seeped into the skin, which includes his nails which over time have become hard and sharp. Mathias has thin black Lichtenberg figure scars up both arms and over his shoulders which shift and flickers like embers beneath his skin when he channels magic.Personality
Mathias Skye is a man shaped by guilt, power, and an unrelenting drive for redemption. His years of surviving the streets left him stubborn, resourceful, and fiercely protective, especially of his sister, Cyd, who is the one constant in his life. But beneath his sharp wit and charming exterior lies a man burdened by the scars of his past—both the physical marks of dark magic that flicker like embers across his arms and hands, and the emotional wounds of the destruction it wrought. The reckless use of dark magic during a desperate battle to save Cyd marked him as a dark mage in the eyes of others. His blackened, claw-like hands and ember-lit scars invite suspicion and judgment, and though he understands their wariness, it still cuts deeply. Mathias carries immense guilt over the lives lost in his past and swings between determination to atone and self-destructive behavior, often turning to recreational drugs to dull his inner turmoil.
Relationships outside of Cyd are rare. She is his rock, keeping him grounded and reminding him of the good he’s done as a Hex Hunter. Their shared mission to fight dark forces gives Mathias purpose, but he struggles to let anyone else in. Nike, his ex-girlfriend, was his first serious connection, but their breakup left him cautious.
Mathias is haunted by his own capacity for violence, a side of him that emerges when his loved ones are threatened. His ability to be disturbingly brutal frightens him as much as it does others, but it’s a part of himself he can’t fully suppress. While he now approaches magic with restraint and intention, he knows it will always be both a curse and a gift—a duality he accepts, even if it means constantly walking a tightrope between creation and destruction.
Magic is as natural to Mathias as breathing. Even when he tries to suppress it, it calls to him like a compulsion. It’s his art, his outlet, and an integral part of his identity. Not casting magic feels like denying who he is, leaving him restless and incomplete. He strives to use his power wisely, knowing that while it has caused harm, it also offers the chance for redemption. Mathias understands that his magic doesn’t define him—it’s how he wields it that truly matters.
History
Mathias and Cyd, fraternal twins, grew up as street urchins navigating the treacherous magical underworld of London. Orphaned from a young age, they relied on each other to survive, pulling off petty heists and small-time cons with a mix of charm, cunning, and magic. While Cyd specialized in glamours, cantrips and wards to distract and deceive, Mathias’s raw magical talent was the muscle of their operations, though his he was born with a Hex — his magic disrupted and destroyed electronics — making the use of modern conveniences impossible.Their small-time schemes eventually landed them in hot water with powerful factions of the magical underground, it changed everything. Disguised as magical couriers, the twins used glamors and charm to bluff their way into the the London faction of the Arcana Consortium’s vaults. While Mathias kept the guards distracted with a fake delivery dispute, Cyd bypassed the enchanted locks on the vault. Inside, she grabbed their target—the wand, a powerful magical focus they where tasked with stealing—but something else drew Cyds attention. Cyd stumbled upon a Pendant tucked in a padded velvet case couldn’t resist taking it as well. They almost made it out undetected, but somehow they triggered a ward. A high-speed chase through London’s back alleys ensued, forcing Mathias to use overwhelming fire magic to block their pursuers. When they delivered the wand, the twins were blamed for the increased scrutiny on magical black-market trades. They lost a key contact and found themselves blacklisted by several underground factions. The Arcana Consortium launched a relentless search for its thieves. London became too dangerous, with the Consortium closing in. America’s vast magical underground seemed like the perfect place to disappear, they stowed away on a ship bound for New York City, seeking a fresh start in the bustling chaos of the city’s magical community.
In New York, their antics quickly caught the attention of Augustus Devereaux, an old-world mage of immense power and influence. Augustus, a master manipulator, saw in the twins a rare potential: their resourcefulness, moral flexibility, and untapped magical abilities made them the perfect tools for his ambitions. Offering them food, shelter, and the illusion of stability, he took them under his wing.
For a time, Augustus groomed Mathias and Cyd to serve as his agents, subtly testing their loyalty while shaping them into the henchmen he desired. Cyd’s affinity for blending magic with modern technology intrigued him, while Mathias’s raw power made him an asset despite his Hex. But Augustus’s true intentions were far darker. Obsessed with wielding the most powerful magic, he sought to push the twins beyond their limits.
The breaking point came when Augustus attempted to have Cyd possessed by a powerful spirit to amplify her magical capacity. To him, the sacrifice was justified—a necessary cost to make her a more useful pawn. When Mathias discovered the plan, he confronted Augustus, sparking a brutal magical duel. Dark magic crackled through the air, each spell carrying a price. Augustus, experienced in mitigating the cost of dark magic through sacrifices, held the upper hand. Mathias, unprepared for such a fight, paid the toll with his own body and soul as he hurled desperate spells to protect his sister.
The battle left Mathias gravely injured, both physically and magically, and the twins barely escaped with their lives. Fleeing Augustus’s wrath, they were left scarred—Mathias with the lingering effects of his injuries and Cyd haunted by the near possession that could have erased her entirely.
The fight with Augustus left Mathias forever changed. In his desperation to save Cyd, he channeled an overwhelming surge of dark magic beyond his skill or control, and the cost was devastating. His hands turned black from the second knuckle onward, and jagged, ember-like scars crawled up his arms and shoulders, flickering faintly whenever he uses magic. But these marks were only the beginning.
The magical backlash unleashed unimaginable pain—searing, unrelenting agony that no medicine or drug could dull because it was magical in nature. For months, the pain consumed him, pushing him to the edge of madness. Worse still, he suffered magical burnout, severing his connection to the very force that defined him. The loss of his magic left him hollow and adrift, a shadow of himself.
Those dark months nearly broke him. Wracked with guilt and despair, Mathias grappled with the possibility that he might never cast again. Though his magic eventually returned, his scars and blackened hands marked him as a dark mage, a constant reminder of the power that nearly destroyed him.
After months of hiding and struggling to survive, the twins decided to leave their old ways behind. They stumbled into the world of the Hex Hunters, an enigmatic group tasked with protecting humanity from magical threats and maintaining the illusion of the Veil—the fragile barrier that keeps the supernatural hidden from the mundane world.
It was Bella, a savvy and experienced Hex Hunter, who saw potential in Mathias and Cyd. Showing them how to use their cunning, skills, and knowledge of the magical underground to reclaim dangerous relics, combat evil forces, and keep the Veil intact.
They’ve learned to wield magic more formally, understanding its nature as a tool and the high price it demands—especially the perilous allure of dark magic. Though they’ve found purpose and a measure of redemption, the shadow of Augustus Devereaux looms over them still.
Little Facts
Mathias has a thing for lemon drops. He is really good at using a bat for non-sport purposes.
While he’s quick to crack a joke, serious emotional moments leave him flustered and stammering.
