Purring Is Good For Rest

“See you later, Skorn.” Yule said as she got up and headed over to put her tray away. She would go to Nilima after and smile. “When you’re ready we can show you our room.”

“Okay.” Nilima said, bussing her tray. This was something new. In Amihan baseline slaves cleaned up after meals.

Haven followed Yule.

Skorn waved at them and stayed with Joel to make sure the coyote would stay out of trouble.

Yule would happily walk with them to their room, pointing out locations and explaining them to Nilima as they went. There was even a gym for basic exercising. Everyone they passed was always a mixture of meta and baselines, all mingling and talking. A lot of them were getting ready for bed or night shift work.

“How do you keep track of who the baselines are when they’re dressed like everyone else?” Nilima asked.

Yule looked at Nilima in confusion. “Why wouldn’t they dress like everyone else? We’re all equals here.” She opened the door to their room.

This was so strange. Nilima wondered if it really was as unsustainable as she had been told. They seemed to be getting along.

“Well, this is our room.” Yule made a sweeping motion and gestured to the extra bed. “That’s your bed, so feel free to get comfortable. I’m going to go shower.” She gave both Nilima and Haven a little nod before heading to the bathroom. It was a nightly ritual for her to take a shower.

Haven usually hit the shower at night too. Not at the same time as Yule, despite the rumors.

Nilima looked at her bed.

Yule would come out soon after, already dressed in cute pink pajamas. She would flop down onto her bed and let out a happy sigh. “Comfy bed.” She purred.

Haven chuckled. “You say that every night.” She grabbed her own pajamas and went to take a shower.

Nilima sat on her bed. She told herself she was safe.

“Because it’s truuuuueeee!” Yule giggled and kicked her legs in a silly manner. She had on cute cupcake socks. Sitting up, she looked at Nilima. “I hope you like it here!”

“I like it so far.” Nilima said. She leaned back against her pillow. “I didn’t expect it to be like this here.”

“How do you mean? So…free?” Yule asked as she rolled onto the stomach and purred again. It was yet another part of her routine. She even started kneading the bed.

“I was told that the baselines were betraying you. That the Underground is weak and failing.” Nilima said.

“The Underground is strong and trying to help us, though.” Yule replied and stretched out before crawling under her blankets and basically becoming a cat burrito.

“I know… I can see that.” Nilima said.

“Also, don’t let Nero scare you. He’s a big softy.” Yule said as she began to slowly fall asleep. The purring would tell Nilima she had indeed passed out.

Nilima listened to Yule purring. She sounded strangely soothing.

This is how Yule would sleep the entire night, cat ears twitching every now and then.

Nilima fell asleep listening to Yule purr. She never heard Haven return from her shower.
