Skye Life - Vas has a Home
The place smelled of mildew and rot, dishes remained in the sink unwashed, and clothes still hung in the one closet. In one corner was a futon, which Serena offered some sage advice for. “Let me find something to beat the mattress with. You know,” She said. “In case.” The frame itself was broken, most of the mattress lay on the floor, the other half on the remaining in-tact slats.
Vas want to open a window to start airing the place out. “This isn’t so bad.” He said in a positive tone. Giving how the last 48 hours ran as far as he was concerned thing where looking up. “A lot of cleaning. Some fixing … maybe more then some fixing. And I get to be nearby.”
“I can see you every day,” she said happily. “Just… if anyone, you know, comes around, try an’ get out fast.”
“Becuase i’m not supposed to be here?” Vas asked.
“I did ask how you felt ‘bout breaking and entering.” Serena reminded him.
Vas took a deep breath. “Well. It’s only a misdemeanor if you get caught right?”
“Why would you get caught?” Serena asked, crinkling her nose. “You get caught, you go to detention, like Isaac. An’ I don’t have enough credits to get you outta detention. An’ if I did have enough credits to get you outta detention, how would it look if I got you outta detention ‘fore I got Isaac outta detention? Don’t get caught. You’re….” she lowered her voice to a whisper, “a hellhound. The best hellhound there ever was. Don’t let that happen.”
Vas scratched his nose and nodded taking what she said seriously. “I wont.” He empasised. “If I find credits maybe I can help you get Isaac out …” Vas paused a moment looking around. “... maybe after i get some cleaning supplies.”
Serena scowled. “You can’t,” she said. “On account of even if you have enough to pay the fine, they charge you room an’ board for the amount of time you’re in. It just keeps addin’ up, an’ Mathias won’t let me rob an atm.”
“Would an ATM have enough credits?” Vas asked innocently.
“Probably,” Serena said. “If I went to the city, which I’m also not supposed to do.”
“Maybe when I heal up a bit more.” Vas said thoughtfully. “Wouldn't it be more dangerous if you did something like that in the City? And how you carry it all home … if … the ATM … has lots of credit to carry.” He said, realizing now how stupid he might be sounding.
“Transfer it on to a cred stick,” Serena told him. “ATM’s here, they hardly fill ‘em up on account of they always get robbed.”
“Yea I'm not that great with computers, not in that kind of way. But I'll find something I can do to help out.” Vas said, looking through the cabinets.
“Just don’t get caught,” Serena offered. “You want me to stick around for a while, so you get used to bein’ here?”
“Are you brother and sister expecting you home sooner? If not, sure. But I also understand if you gotta go back.” Vas answered.
"They know I'm with you, tryin' to find you someplace to live," Serena said with a shrug. "An' they can text me if they're worried."
Vas perked. He much rather have her company then be alone. “Okay, so I think first we should take stock of what we have and go out and get what we need. Plus food. I'm pretty sure if there is anything in the fridge it's long taken a life of its own.”
“How are you gonna pay for food?” Seena asked.
“I … have no idea yet.” Vas admitted looking around the room as if an answer might be hiding in the cobwebs. “But we’ll figure something out right?” He asked looking to Serena.
“Yeah, ‘course,” Serena admitted. “We’ll get you squared away. I mean, I dunno if we can do strawberry shakes, or MRE’s, but protein paste for sure.”
Vas perked. “I don’t mind the protein paste. It ain’t so bad. When I find something so I can earn credits it’ll be even better but first thing that need squaring is this place.” He said looking to see if there were any cleaning supplies huddling in fear inside a cupboard or closet.
“Cyd works at a diner… they always need dishwashers. Can you wash dishes?” Serena asked.
Vas gave her blank stare. “I dunno … but im sure I can learn.” He said noting how gross the sink looked. The concept seemed simple enough but sweeping and dusting the floor seemed easier at the moment. “It can’t be that hard right?”
Serena made an iffy gesture. “If Cyd works there, it can’t be hard at all, “ she giggled.
