His Eyes Open
Underground Mutant Community - Wyoming
Finlay(Khunara) lets her words sink in as he stares at the fading image of Khunara. He is left alone in the boat upon the ocean, fishing pole still in hand. The storm has settled directly overhead and is so massive now it covered the entire sky as far as the eyes could see. It is growing darker by the second and it is so thick that even the lightening arcing up above doesn’t provide much illumination.
Suddenly he feels a tug on the line. Finlay(Khunara) begins to pull and reel, and pull and reel. Whatever it is, it is putting up one heck of a fight. He must use his legs bracing against the side of the boat for leverage. It must be huge based on the way the rod bent almost to the point of breaking.
After what felt like an endurance marathon, Finlay(Khunara) prevailed. Out of the ocean emerged his catch, it was a small brilliant light about the size of a grapefruit on the end of the hook. He fumbled to balance and grab the line.
Inspecting it closer, Finlay(Khunara) could not make out any details because it was just so bright. He had to shield his eyes after a moment, because the intensity of the orb was growing the longer he looked at it. Then with a sudden blast, like the forceful waves of a sonic boom it exploded. The entire storm evaporated in the blast radius, leaving behind calm and clear skies.
Finlay(Khunara), so startled, lost his balance in the rocking boat and fell over backwards over the edge. He plunged into the cold ocean water.
…..
Back in the medical wing of the underground base, the unconscious form of Finlay had shifted into the smaller form of Khunara before the dream walker had left his dreamscape. It caused the equipment that he was attached to to immediately alert the medical staff on deck; all the readouts on him instantly altered. They were busy readjusting him in the bed and hooking up a new IV bag.
And just as the explosion took place inside the dream, the form of Khunara in the bed shifted back to Finlay. The nurses were once again at it trying to readjust all the equipment and tubes connected to him. Moments later Finlay’s eyes very slowly opened as if waking groggily from a long slumber. He remembered nothing of the dream, except he thinks he had been dreaming about something.
He lay there silently as his eyes adjusted to the interior lighting. It was blurry at first, but swiftly things came into focus. Where was he? What had happened? It felt and seemed like he was in a hospital surrounded by their staff. He felt so tired and closed his eyes.
