Kerensa grew up in one of the richest families in Portside. She knew early on that she would have little to no choice in who she married so made the most of being engaged to Jago Kenwyck and tried to overlook his flaws. His many, many flaws. When Ila begged Jago to do right by their child Kerensa wanted out of the marriage. Kerensa told her parents but they considered Jago too good of a match to give up on just because he might have an unclaimed bastard. Seeing no way out, Kerensa went through with marrying him. Jago told her that he had never laid with Ila and that she was just crazy, Kerensa tried to believe it.She thinks that Jago was abusing the servants and did not believe that they were all just thieves but she had no proof so like with Ila, she tried to believe that Jago was innocent. She suspects that Jago had even tried something with her longtime confidant and maid, Melyor. One night Melyor was wild-eyed and skittish with no explanation when asked, Kere was afraid of what she would learn if she pressed her for answers. The next day Jago hinted that Melyor was looking for employment elsewhere. Kerensa quicky insisted that there must be some misunderstanding, that Melyor would never leave her. Kere was desperate to keep her closest friend she made sure that Melyor was never in a situation where Jago could be with her alone, she and Melyor never talked about what happened and Kere tried not to think about it.
While Kerensa was pregnant with their first child she suspected that Jago was cheating on her but never confronted him, she did not want to know. Jago was visibly disappointed when she gave birth to a girl, named Sevi. Kerensa told herself that it was just disappointment from her not giving him a son that made Jago so impatient and Kere tried to blame herself when Jago pressured her into getting pregnant again too soon against the advice of the midwife. She gave birth to a second daughter less than a year after the first. This daughter was named Ebrel. Jago was not just disappointed about not having a son, he was angry. His veneer of kindness was gone and he had taken to hurt Kere in ways that would not show. Kere was exhausted from two pregnancies so close together, but Jago came to her every night. And before he left in the morning he whispered in her ear to make him a son or else. It was a relief when she became pregnant for the third time. She hoped it would be a son this time and was afraid of what Jago would do to her if it was another girl. She even looked into tracking down where Ila wound up, the babe she carried- If it was a boy maybe Jago would claim him as his own and let up on Kere.
Kere had come to loath even the lightest touch from Jago. So when Jago told her that he was going to get a mistress she did not object, it was not like he was loyal before- she had no more doubts about that. She hoped that if Jago had someone who was willing he would stop abusing the servants, stop abusing her, and maybe he would not be so upset if she had another daughter if he had someone to give him sons. She did not meet the mistress, did not want to meet her, and Jago had no interest in introducing them to each other even though she was living in the manse.
Kere thought that life could be tolerable, then heard muffled screaming that the servants deliberately ignored. It came from Jago's wing of the manse. Kere could not just ignore it, someone was scared and in pain and it was not Jago. Kere went to Jago's rooms, and found Jago in a small room off his master bedroom. This was how Kere met Jago's "mistress", and in no way was she willing, she was clearly being tortured. Kere was so horrified by what she was seeing she grabbed a discarded bloody tool and without waiting for Jago to give any explanation she beat him over the head with it. Repeatedly until he lay still on the floor. It was Melyor who finally stopped Kere, pulling the tool from Kere's hands and helped her untie Jago's so-called mistress. Kere had expected an older, experienced woman. This girl was at least two years younger than Kere. She had stopped screaming but would not speak. Kere could not tell if Jago was alive or dead and did not want to look any closer, she did not want to be there anymore. They locked Jago in the small room, and his master bedroom after that to delay him being found. She and Melyor quickly decided to run away, taking the mute girl and babies with them along with what coin and valuables they could carry. While tracking Ila Kere had learned of an abandoned keep and village that was being built. It sounded like a good place for a new beginning.
