Howling At The Moon

Wolf knew they were getting somewhere with the boy. Wolf also knew this communication would take time. The boy could put things together quickly which impressed Wolf.

Thinking for a moment. "Islana, don't get overly attached to the boy, we will have to go when we find his people. Maybe Boyce is too hard to pronounce." Wolf thought some more he got his Wolfskin out and patted the fur "Wolf, '' said Boyce, repeated it a few times and see if the boy said it in his own language or even if he repeated it in Boyce's language.

Islana could only nod at what Boyce said about becoming overly attached. That part was going to be hard for her. Even if she knew it was true.

What if they didn't find Kaithak's people? What happens then? It was a definite possibility. While Islana was hoping that they could deliver the boy to his own people, that was the best scenario and things didn't always work out that way.

Wim watched the scene play out and remained quiet.

He thought to himself, 'The boy would probably steal their food and take off in the night or he wanted us to fight something dangerous.'

Wim watched the bats flying from small caverns in the cliffs to hunt their prey.

Islana watched as Boyce tried to get Kaithak to say "Wolf". Islana had never really thought to call the man Wolf. He had been introduced to her as Boyce Blackwolf.

She had called him by the formal Mr. Blackwolf at first or Sir. The young woman had been incredibly hesitant to talk to him at first.

The man though had a way of easing people into things. It had been a useful skill with her. Eventually, she had started calling him Boyce and eventually he had gotten her complete recollection of the investigation into the cult.

However that had occurred she was glad for it. Islana was also glad that she no longer considered Wim the enemy but that was different.

Wolf could see Islana watching him. Wolf realized she had never called him that before. He knew it was a nickname that he got some years back as a scout and on other expeditions. Most people here never use that name for him.

Wolf hesitated some be for speaking not sure if he was ready for the step he was going to take. "You guys can call me Wolf, if you want. It is a name that was given to me back home by people I work with and some people that let us say and my enemies too. My... close friends call me that. I guess you could call it a title as well," said Boyce.

The boy struggled to pronounce wolf. The meaning escaped him.

Islana smiled at Boyce, "Wolf. That's going to take some getting used to but thank you." She had the feeling it was a name reserved for certain people and she was glad to be considered in that group.

The boy seemed to not understand what Boyce was getting at. Islana thought for a moment and pulled out one of the notebooks Wim had gifted her, she turned to an empty page.

The redhead drew a wolf. It was the best representation if a wolf she could do but it looked like a wolf. She pointed at the drawing and said, "wolf" then repeated it.

"I guess one of us could howl, if this doesn't work," she commented to the two men.

The boy looked at the drawing and frowned pointing at the horses.

Clearly the boy thought the drawing was a horse. Islana looked at the page. Maybe, she needed drawing lessons.

Well, there was one more thing that might work. Could she give a convincing howl? Maybe.

"If either of you ever say I did this, I'll deny it." Though the young woman was clearly joking.

Clearing her throat and taking a deep breath, then she breathed out. Then another deep breath.

Letting out a howl that might rival the actual animal, Islana did that twice, then said, "wolf."

Surprising herself. Where did that come from? All those years listening to wolves in the woods might have rubbed off on her.

The boy looked at Islana and smiled as she howled. His eyes filled with merriment as he understood what she tried to say. He pointed at the man and howled himself.

"Kolv..." The body said smiling.
