Apothecary – Wim & Elizabeth
It had taken some arm twisting to get Wim to get his arm looked at at the apothecary. Elizabeth and Wim entered with his left forearm bandaged.
Nicolaus looked up from his studies to the small brass bell ringing for his attention. Tolan must have a visitor needing his particular attention. He removed the lenses and quickly washed up his hands and arms in a rosewater filled tub and dried them with a clean bit of cloth. He padded up the timber stairs to the main floor and entered the front room to see Wim Riese and a young woman, his eyes noted a bandage on the young man's forearm.
"Good Morrow Sir and Lady, May I be of service?"
Wim looked at Elizabeth and said to Nicolaus, "Ms. Sadir believes I need to have my arm examined or fall off." The fact that it hurt was minor compared to playful flirting he was doing with Elizabeth.
He gave Nicolaus a smile.
Nicolaus walked to a nearby folded chair and set it in a sunbeam near the front of the shop. He gestured to Wim and busied himself gathering a small tray containing a washbasin, cloths and other accoutrements. "What caused the injury, if I might ask?"
"An assassin's knife," he said with a wink to Nicholaus. His face was a bit serious like he was holding some of it back. Wim had just said he got hurt not how. It would be easy to guess that Wim had hurt himself.
Nicolaus nodded and set the tray on a folding support while sliding a stool nearby and taking a seat. He gently unwrapped the bandage and tossed it aside and studied the wound. "As you say."
Elizabeth acted as if Wim was joking.
After ascertaining there was no serious damage he cleaned the wound and added some salve then applied a paste. "This will numb the area so I can finish." He picked up the abandoned dressing and went to a table then returned with a needle and thread. He pricked the location of the wound delicately. "Can you feel that?"
Wim did not watch as he worked.
"A little bit," he said while trying not to watch.
After a moment, "Go ahead." It would hurt less than getting it or when he used the arm.
Elizabeth on the other hand took an interest in watching him work.
Nicolaus used tiny stitches to limit the scarring, and quickly redressed the wound. "Keep it clean and dry and have the dressing changed daily. Do you require anything for the pain?" He asked as he cleared away the tray.
Wim looked at him seriously.
"Something enough to take the edge off," he said.
Only Nicholaus knew of his experimenting with felfar and its hold on him.
"I have just the thing." He gathered several more packets of the compound he had created earlier for Wim and presented them.
Wim took them and smiled.
Then he pulled out his coin purse to pay.
"Any special instructions," Elizabeth asked sure that Wim would not be able to care for himself.
"Only use the amount in the packet or less. It mixes well with wine."
"And the bandages? How often to change?" She asked.
"The dressing? Daily or if it becomes soiled." Nicolaus handed her a roll of bandages from a nearby table. "Like these, clean, boiled cloth."
"Can you show me how to end the wrap again?" She asked. Making Wim hold out his arm.
"Of course." Nicolaus went through the procedure from start to finish.
Wim rolled complied with a few comments to express his displeasure of being the teaching dummy.
Elizabeth smiled and said, “Thank you. We are going to get a meal at the Oak Cup, if you would like to come?”
"Thank you Lady, but I wouldn't wish to intrude on your meal, the third wheel on the cart as it were." He smiled at the young woman.
