Some things never change

Alexis couldn’t say she gave a rat’s ass about Zane’s appreciation at the moment.

Especially since he seemed think that overwatch a public hanging would be a fine follow-up mission after having to beat up farmhands.
Well, it fit the theme, she could admit that much.

As far as she was concerned, a few names of people that most likely had gone into hiding at this point wasn’t a good trade-off for deepening the chasm between the keep and the people even more. She could only assume the executions would only make matters worse.

She had never enjoyed public executions. As with many things, she could get behind the reasons why they were done, but personally?
If they needed to be executed for their crimes, then just kill them. Quickly. Without a spectacle.

Morbid as it sounded, on the battlefield things just were easier. More honest, in a way. Because the schemers usually stayed away from the front lines, lest their precious selves could be hurt. The people who crossed blades there, they usually cared about little more than prevailing.

Lying on her bunk, trying to get some much needed rest, Alexis not for the first time wondered wether she shouldn’t just have stayed in Helias. In the end, it might be a new world, but people were still much the same. Ambition and greed.

It was her own fault for not being able to adjust to that. She knew. But still - she couldn’t bring herself to let go.

Well. War was coming. Maybe it would put an end to her struggle, as battle had a way to do.

Alexis turned on her side, letting her thoughts slip away. She needed at least a short nap to get through her guard duties later.
