A New Lead?

JP between Jaxx, Omni, Lorem and Winteroak

Hunter was quick to see the scene Gonyaul was making and was able understand the body language and the few words he said while pointing at an injured man towing a cart. Hunter then tapped Sgt. Carver on the arm with his staff as he said, “Your snitch just found your suspect. It’s the wounded man towing the cart with three crates. I suggest tailing him before arresting to see his contacts.”

This was something Hunter would do in the past to find his real targets and it was very effective.

Piecing things together in her head, Voah concluded that this Sgt Carver and her group must be investigating the attacks from the cult. Could they have something to do with the murder aboard The Hogue? And if that was the case… what were they doing on the voyage? Was it just coincidence that they had come along as sailors on the voyage or was there something more sinister at hand?

Glancing down at the crowd of workers, Voah scanned the docks and the shadows between buildings and stacks of crates. Were there assassins keeping tabs on her? Waiting to strike?

She scrunched her nose at thought. She didn’t quite believe the notion that one of these cultists rode along on the voyage because surely, they would want the Arbiter dead and they could have done away with her while she was ill. Still... there was a chance, she supposed.

Regardless of the cult’s involvement in The Hogue murder, there was little else to go on as far as continuing her investigation in proving the innocence of Blackwolf.

“Captain, I would like to see your log of the voyage to Sentinel and a full manifest of passengers and crew.“ she said, deciding to cross reference the names of any of the cult members the city had caught.

Carver looked at Gonyaul. Arresting this one would likely spook the cult more. The same as they had with the man currently at the Keep.

She turned to the Arbiter. "Maybe you can take the boy here and tail him?" She suggested.

Voah only had to think about it for a moment before deciding which course of action to take. Talking to the crew of The Hogue seemed like a dead end and waiting around for the guards to catch the cultists wouldn’t do anyone any good. So she hoped that following the suspect would help to kill two birds with one stone.

“Certainly, Sergeant... Can I trust you to have someone transcribe or deliver the items that I requested from the Captain?”

Carver nodded at the Arbiter. Best this way. If some stinking cult was involved she wanted to keep her distance. One more year for her parcel of land. Nothing else mattered. She was planning to go back to the Keep and put the screws to the other prisoner anyways.

“Hunter are you with me? I understand if you decide otherwise.” Voah gave the man an out because he was still injured.

Gonyaul’s good feeling from having identified his assassin to the authorities suddenly turned into a sinking knot in his stomach. Had he heard Sgt. Carver correctly? He was being passed off yet again and to the one person in Ostiarium whom he wanted to never meet, the Arbiter.

He remained hopeful that perhaps they would change there minds as he stood off to the side, hiding his disapproval of this plan under the shadows of his hooded cloak. He took a deep breath trying to center himself back to a state of conscientious. He took a pause to check his attitude, so that he would respond well with the vulnerability he was being thrust into instead of knee-jerk reacting.

He also learned Hunter’s name. Or perhaps it was his profession. He was not quite sure.

Hunter looked at Voah as she actually gave him a chance to bail on her. He found it odd that she would say that despite nagging him to go with her in the first place. He could leave and go back to carving wooden figurines all alone at the twin’s shack. However he knew that would be a bad idea. If something happened to the Arbiter after he left, he would never hear the end of it. So he shook his head no and replied, “I am curious how good these so called cult assassins are. It may lift my spirits if we exterminate the whole lot. And who knows... Maybe the leader is a mage. Taking his head might clear my mind.” Hunter had a sly smile on his face as he was messing with Voah.

She shook her head and gave Hunter a disapproving smirk.

"Cheeky? Sounds like your spirits are already lifting. But let's not be too impertinent to the possible dangers that await us. That's what got you stuck with me to begin with."

She turned to the young man. "Come along now."
