Nicolaus Cagliostro - Apothecary/Chymist/Chirurgen Shop
Nicolaus Cagliostro - Apothecary/Chymist/Chirurgen Shop
Nicolaus had spent most of the first day back immersed in the great copper bathing tub in the rear of the Apothecary Shop. He had simply dozed in the steaming water at first, then his mind had begun to catalogue the events of the journey, twisting them and studying them from various angles. How did these pieces fit into a whole? What was the significance? Tolan had read the room, and foregone inundating Cagliostro immediately with a ream of messages and requests.
A week had flown by, constituting mainly doing up a backlog of medicants, elixirs and unguents and doing rounds to visit the frayed members of the expedition. He contemplated their progress as he mechanically worked the mortar and pestle on the cluttered work table.
Alexis' wounds were healing; clean living and an active lifestyle appeared to work wonders for the formidable woman. Her cracked ribs had needed a tight binding to allow her to function and ignore his suggestion of bed rest. She was extremely driven, but she was also doing remarkably well with a minimum of treatment.
Tarmen was back constructing the wall. He had recovered through what Nicolaus suspected was force of will, a unwillingness to be weakened. Though there were likely aches and pains and roughly healed scars, he appeared to be coping.
Hunter had received a severe physical abrading. A blow to the head had brain addled him, blackening and blooding his eyes. Nicolaus had been worried trepanning would be necessary if he did not wake, and later when the dizziness and blurred vision were a major symptom. However the man had made excellent progress under his caregivers' focused attention. They came regularly to the shop for herbs and salves between his professional visits and now the Woodsman was up and about on crutches. There would be stiffness in his calf for some time until he worked it out through use and regular stretching, but the early treatment had likely saved the leg from infection. Once he started to eat proper meals again Nicolaus was convinced he would be right as rain.
Voah was the direct antithesis of Hunter. While having her share of wounds, the arrow puncture and deep cuts to her thigh and face, it seemed to Nicolaus that her worst damage was of the mind or perhaps the 'soul'. The Friar Jassin Balvaris had sent word when the fever finally broke and that she was taking thin soup and sleeping deeply, if erratically. As weak as a kitten and given to relapses of nightmare ridden fever, she WAS getting stronger and he was confident she would outlast or overcome this malady.
In her final weakness had opened her to something that had overwhelmed right as she had been victorious. As she had been the most effective member, Nicolaus had many questions on how in further encounters preparations could be made. Magik was again a part of the world. And her wounds, they seemed to heal with no scarring at all, as if they had never been, was this another form of this magic or something else?
He left her some mild pain elixirs and a small packet of Ancho mushroom and Cylax Leaves powder to help focus her mind and give her clarity as needed. He had suggested some mild euphorics such as Stogasmaoke or Kratos but she had wanted to retain a clear head.
Nicolaus shook his head and focused on the patient figure of Tolan standing across the work table.
"Apologies sir, this sample was brought for your attention, as it wasn't in the index I gave a small fee to it's supplier as you instructed."
Nicolaus waved the discussion of money away. He raised the stoppered beaker to the light and gently swirled the thick viscous liquid. "Who brought this sample and from where did it originate? ... Local tree sap I assume, but ... strange."
Tolan shrugged, "A foreigner with a heavy accent I didn't recognize, said he found it in a dark barked tree outside the colony. He said he would be back with more..."
Nicolaus glanced at the man "In the future, secure a means to contact those that bring samples, - name, location, where they work, in fact record a short description of the person. Take one of my unused journals and start a dedicated record."
His intense eyes returned to the beaker, "Sometimes the secrets of the world are hiding in plain sight."
