“Gonyaul?!” shouted Voah in surprise.
She fumbled over to Tarmen in the spot where Gonyaul had been seconds earlier and scanned the area. Still no sign of her lover or the Alossi.
She shook her head in confusion and denial. Adrenaline still pumped through her veins, her body and mind not quite understanding yet that the battle was over and that she had lost.
“No…” she whispered desperately.
Her brain raced to process exactly what had just transpired. The lightning. The shattered remnants of the silver soldier’s blue rods remained where they had landed, the surface sand around them turned to thin glass.
Her investigative skills kicked in. Voah recalled she had been thrown aloft by the help of Alexis. She hadn’t noticed Gonyaul but she had heard the Alossi shout and throw something… something too small to be a weapon… maybe? Something small enough to fit in her hand and it must’ve been aimed at Gonyaul. Something that turned them both into… nothing.
No, they couldn’t be “gone” gone, Voah was sure of it. According to the Alossi’s words, she had come to “claim” him.
The arbiter had read of magik that could transport people and objects elsewhere. But where were they? Where?! Voah once again shifted her gaze wildly along the horizon at anything that could serve as an occluded area or hiding spot, occasionally mumbling incoherently as she did so.
There was nothing in close range. There were no figures in the distance and no sign of animals fleeing in shock of a randomly appearing entity. Nothing but the gray turbulent sky, rolling tide, and the occasional gull.
Judging by the emptiness of their surroundings and the variety and power of the stormwielder’s abilities, it was likely that they were spirited away much further away than Greyriver Company could see or hope to achieve immediately.
Considering Gonyaul as still alive, Voah wasn’t ready to give up hope. He was the catalyst in changing her life for the better, to let go of the past, and he was the hope for her future. She knew he would say to forgive… but that wasn’t something she could do for every situation. The guilt and anger and disappointment in herself that was boiling to the surface was transferred to a focus on finding him first, then getting revenge.
“Aloss… the shipwreck!” On… on on Sentinel! Could she have taken him there?” she shouted to the others.
Her logic dictated that the Alossi had come from Sentinel and if Voah’s memory and spatial awareness served correctly, they were not too far north in proximity to the island’s position. But… there was no way of getting there without a boat.
