Sir Eudon Zane jaw tightened as he cast his eyes on the young noble. He was unmistakable among the rabble.
Last year he had received a letter from the young man's father requesting help in securing passage for the boy to the Newfoundland. The Riese family had always been loyal to House Zane and Bloodstone's barony. The young man's grandfather had been a seneschal to Eudon's father a few decades ago.
It had not been easy to secure the passage. Nobles were not necessarily something Ostiarium needed and the Lord Commander was very peculiar on who and which families were allowed into the city. No, it had not be easy. But the youth was here now. He had fulfilled the first request to his father.
~Now for the second...~ the Knight of Salos thought and strode forward to greet the young man.
The young noble recognised him and bowed. "Lord Zane, I am Wim Riese. My father sends his thanks and an small token of our appreciation." he said handing a bottle to the towering figure. "The finest red from Selkis."
Zane took the gift. Some courtesies should always be observed after all. He turned the bottle in his huge hand. Selkis was the northern most point in Salos. A small village in the Earldom of Mentratarta , famous for its robust and strong wines. It could be worth a small fortune out here. A luxury. Zane nodded his thanks to the youth.
"Come." he barked and turned around expecting the man to keep up.
A few minutes later they both stood in the centre of a very large square. A small shrine rose not far from them. Wim recognised the symbol of Kupen.
"Now, I am a man of few subtleties. And I prefer to be direct." He his deep voiced boomed as he turned to Wim.
"Your father asked me two things. One that I secure passage for you to Ostiarium and the second that I help you find a purpose in life. Seems you are fond of using your time and skills engaged in questionable activities."
The young man started to protest, but Zane raised his hand signalling silence.
"I do not judge. I was young myself once, although a long time ago it feels." he grinned. "I only know of one way to do what your father asks, and that young master Wim is to put you in control of your life and destiny." he paused and looked the young man in the eye. Talking to him man to man.
"I can take you on as my squire. You might be a bit older than a normal squire but you can still start your training to become a knight. That is what your father likely wished for you. A reputable occupation. One that can bring much honour to your family."
Another pause. And he looked around the square as if he was actually surveying the whole town.
"Or you can choose to do whatever you want to do. Be your own man. Do what you want with your life. In the New World he opportunities are here for people to make a name for themselves in their own right."
Sir Zane saw the confusion on the young man's face. He was likely not expecting to be offered control of his own destiny.
"If you decide to take on my offer come see me at the Keep after the Festival of the Fall. And if you don't, I wish you good fortune, young master Riese. Be the best you can be. I can do no more for you or your father..." and with that he turned from the surprised young noble and walked away. He had other duties to attend to.
OCC: Wim, until you make a decision, anyone with coin could find lodgings at one of the few taverns in town like the Drunken Hare. Anyone with no coin could always join the labourers in Barracks district. In exchange of joining the labour forces.
