Traversing Rooftops
Gonyaul was bored beyond belief. He had spent a considerable amount of time patrolling the rooftop, going from each side and monitoring all the cardinal points. Nothing was happening down below, not near nor far.
This added to his worry for Voah. He knew she could handle herself, but she definitely should have been back by this late hour. His concern doubled when his memory reminded him that every time she went off without him things went horribly wrong for some reason. For instance: the mines under Aquilos, going solo to Margraves, disappearing with Vastad, and now this. By the time he finished remembering all these events, and the unfavorable effects set in motion, he was even more anxious for her well-being than minutes ago.
Gonyaul was interrupted by a sickening feeling in his gut and slight nausea in his mouth. He realized he was starving. He had not eaten since breakfast, which was meager to say the least. He checked the bundle of valuable he brought from their campsite and found the dry food pouch. It was lighter than he expected, most likely because Voah took some with her wherever she went off to. He quickly replenished his aching gut and energy reserves with some nuts and dried fruit.
It was late enough that all hard working people should be to bed; however, with all the adrenaline from his current circumstances he was wide awake. He still believed that it was best to stay close enough to their campsite in case she finally returned and all his worry would be for nothing. A foolish hope. Yet that didn’t mean he couldn’t see their campsite from a further distance, affording him to venture more into the city.
Gonyaul hid the things he brought with him on the rooftop. It would be his place to sleep tonight if he had to come back empty handed. Bringing just the staff, he started making his way carefully and quietly from rooftop to rooftop back towards the heart of the city. He stayed along the corridor though that continued to give him sight lines back to their camp. At each rooftop he would pause and look about in all directions to the world below and then beyond.
