Walking Away

Gonyaul walked away from the gathering with a heavy heart. On the one hand, he failed to find Voah. On the other hand, he felt inept to stop reasonable grief from being transformed into neurotic fervor. Indecency was brandishing it’s ugly head yet again, yet Gonyaul was not given over to despair because he was confident that decency was not entirely eradicated. And just like no amount of darkness could sniff out light, no amount of falsehood could snuff out the truth; and the truth would always eventually come to the surface. It would just be a question of how much suffering took place in the meantime.

Gonyaul looked back to the scene, now smaller from the distance he had put between himself and the people. He sighed and then continued on his way down the deserted street. He was no hero. He was no warrior. He was no one of influence or power. In the grand scheme of things, he was but a tiny drop of rain in a big sea. He realized he was out of his depth and by comparison to others along his travels, underwhelming.

He stopped walking and looked up at the night sky through the framing rooftops of the sandwiching buildings. It was a beautiful night. Peaceful once away from the funeral ceremony. It was so easy to get lost in a false sense of security. But one must always remember that evil was always at work, even when one couldn’t see it.

~Voah always run off after trouble, Hoi? Please look after. I would like to see her again.~ he thought to himself as he continued back to their campsite near the edge of the docks along the river from Fang. He still tried talking to Cambena and Hoi like Voah taught him. He didn’t care for the other Pillars. He didn’t worship them like Voah though, instead speaking to them with childlike innocence and as if they were equals.

He hoped he would find Voah back at their campsite. If not, he would need to make the decision on how best to proceed based on the given circumstances.
