Gods, she would never get used to this… this… whatever this was.
Shards of knowledge not her own, like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, hinting at a bigger picture, but much too fragmented to make sense of it. At least as of yet.
Who knew if it ever could be completed.
Alexis traced the invisible triangle on her map with her finger, before rolling it up and storing it away. Hesitantly she rose and approached the decrepit door.
It looked like it could break down completely at the slightest touch so she very gingerly pushed against it, revealing the interior of the derelict building.
Clearly, no one had been here for a very long time. What little furniture she could make out had fallen into disrepair. It did not give away for what this place once had served. Parts of the walls and the roof had broken down, which didn’t help matters. Alexis warily eyed the remaining structure, but at least for now it didn’t seem in immediate danger of collapsing.
She carefully stepped over debris and ducked down under a fallen root strut, exploring the interior further until her progress was halted by collapsed wall. She was just about to turn around when she noticed the odd angle some of the debris lay about.
Could it be there was a descent beyond the obstacle? Alexis looked at the damage. That would take a while to clear up, but…
She began to dig and pull and heave away the dirt and stone blocking her way, until she could feel sweat roll down her back and her muscles started to ache with exertion. But finally, after pulling back a particularly obstinate chunk of stone, she peered down a set of stairs leading deep down below the earth.
And she meant deep. This… was very unlikely to end in a wine cellar.
Alexis mused, as she slowly began to descend, already seeing there would be more blockades to clear if she wished to reach the end, that she felt herself strangely reminded of the cave by Maru. A crypt.
It was getting noticeable colder the deeper she went. Unfortunately, it was also getting darker. She would need a torch eventually, if she planned to excavate this. Which she did.
Alexis looked back up. What little light reached down from above now gleamed in shades of red. Night would fall soon.
The mercenary made a decision. She would move her camp here. It made for a pretty good hidey hole, in the city proper and away from prying eyes.
And, more importantly, for whatever reason, she had been drawn here.
She intended to find out why.
