Peeling herself away from Gonyaul, Voah arched her head in the direction of the vision to which he was alluding.
She let go of him and almost compulsively strode a few paces down the gradual decline of the dune on which they were perched.
She inhaled a slow breath of realization, astonishment, and optimism as she looked out toward the lights. Her hair whipped the air as she spun around wide eyed to Gonyaul.
“Is that fire? Campfires? Then there must be people!”
She surprised herself at how she relished the thought of running into the caravan or really anyone this far out. But to be fair, it was a welcome sight after several days, the two of them alone, in the desert and in a ruined fort occupied only by the dead.
She grabbed his hand.
“We must go see for ourselves, nnn?”
Gonyaul outwardly laughed as she grabbed his hand and had already proceeded to pull him several steps down the down slope in the direction of the possible campfires. He had to halt their advanced, to go back and get the full water skins and his staff, having put them down while they were admiring the view. He was quick to rejoin her and side by side take off towards the lights, her enthusiasm added to his own and it gave both a spring in their step.
Gonyaul agreed almost instantly, “Yes, we must go see.”
He assumed that out in the desert it made more sense for others to be hospitable. Ruffians and scoundrels surely wouldn’t travel about for fun looking for easy prey. After all, others were very few and far between and there was no organized path to even consider laying in wait to waylay others. Gonyaul was sure the while the desert may not be the most friendly environment, it had to make its inhabits even more kind to offset the suffering.
And perhaps it was another group in need of assistance. They were fortunate enough to be able to provide just that if needed. Regardless, investigating it was the right course of action.
Together, Voah and Gonyaul cautiously approached the lights on the horizon to get a better look.
