Part 9: The Cupcake

Kaylee saw Conner's wink, which was almost worse than him staring at Blossom and ignoring her. She couldn't even explain why it was bugging her so much. Still, it was Kaylee so she didn't show anything. Instead, she smiled at Conner and kept eating.

Courtney looked at Conner and Kaylee and then Blossom. Things seemed to be getting to Conner. At one end of the table Heath, Sam, JD, and Rose seemed to be enjoying themselves. At the other end where Courtney sat with Matt, Conner, and Kaylee a sort of strange tension hung in the air that hadn't been there before.

Matt turned to her, "Everything OK with you?"

Courtney nodded, "Yeah, sorry about being gone so long. It was my brother, Bobby, on the phone."

Matt thought for a moment. "Bobby is the brother who's 19. Right?"

"Yes," Courtney was impressed he remembered. Her family was a lot to keep track of.

Kaylee asked, "How many brothers do you have?"

Courtney said, "6 all older. I'm the only girl."

Conner looked at Courtney "So, what's going on with Bobby? Or can you talk about it here?" asked Conner, sounding concerned. Conner needs to get his mind off of the girls and on something else. This whole thing that started out to be fun is now starting to bother him.

JD turned to Rose. "Let me show you the proper way to eat a cupcake." JD picked up his cupcake and used his fingers to take the bottom part off. Then he flipped the top part over placing the top with the bottom squishing the frosting in the middle. He held it up to her, "Want a bite? I know if you do It will be even sweeter," said JD softly.

"No, I can talk about it. It’s not bad, I just wasn't expecting it." Courtney took a sip of her soda. "He's decided to join the Army. He used to talk about it when we were kids but he hadn’t mentioned it in years."

Rose, Sam, and Heath all watched as JD pulled apart his cupcake. Then, in essence, made a cupcake sandwich with the icing in the middle.

Rose grinned slightly, "Sure." It looked interesting. "Do you just bite into it?"

JD smiled, "Yes, it's best that way." He said, still holding it.

Conner looked at Courtney again after a drink of his coke. "You know I would have not even thought about it much before this summer but meeting JD and his family I understand more about the military," he said to Courtney. He turned to JD. "Courtney's brother is joining the Army."

JD did not even move his hand, keeping it perfectly still when he turned his head to look at Conner, "Really, cool," he replied to Conner. "Courtney, if he needs anything even to talk to my dad, let me know I will set up something for him," said JD.

Sam was trying to not laugh as she waited to watch Rose bite into the cupcake.

Courtney nodded and heard JD. "Thanks. That would be great actually. We can set something up."

There were things bothering her about this but it had nothing to do with the Army itself or that her brother had chosen to go that route. She didn't want to talk about any of that at the moment.

Courtney looked down at the other end of the table and noticed the attention on that end on Rose. Then she realized what was going on. Speaking quietly to Conner, Matt and Kaylee she said."I think Rose is going to take a bite of whatever it is that JD did to his cupcake."

Kaylee looked over but she was having a hard time seeing what it was. She grabbed her own cupcake and without seeing what JD had done mimicked it. Then asked, "This?"

Courtney nodded.

Kaylee said; "It gives a perfect cake to icing ratio." Then she said, "But it can be a little messy if you’re not used to it. Rose is....proper." Not said in a mean way. More that was why it was surprising that Rose would eat a cupcake that way.

Kaylee, Matt, and Courtney watched the other end of the table.

Rose didn't notice but she did know Sam and Heath were watching. Taking a deep breath as if she was about to dive into a pool, she tilted her head slightly left, moved closer, and took a bite. Getting some icing and cake on her lips and making, not a terrible mess, but it certainly wasn't as neat as she had been eating all evening.

JD turns back to Rose as she takes the bit. Then it hit him. He should have had part of it in his mouth when she took a bite of it. "Anytime Courtney," he replied. He was wondering how Rose would react if he tried to lick the frosting off her lips. The thought made his heart race. He got excited about the whole idea. He waited until she swallowed her bite. Then kissed her before she could do anything else and seductively licked the frosting off Rose's lips. "Now that was good right?" He said softly, then realized that everyone was watching. He cleared his throat. “Hmm.. wow, well good cupcakes." He said his face turned a little red.

Conner laughed some, "There you go again, JD. Showing up all the guys, making us look bad in front of the girls." Conner said loudly to make sure everyone in the room could hear it.

JD now was feeling the eyes on him; he felt embarrassed as the shy side of him started to show.

Dawn noticed the room getting quieter and looked over to the table that held Rose and JD and the others.

Zander asked his sister, "What?"

Dawn looked confused, "I don't know. I think they’re all watching Rose. JD is holding up a cupcake."

Riley turned to see what was going on and watched Rose take a bite of the cupcake and then JD kiss her. She turned back to the table; the other three sitting next to her were a little surprised. She said lightly, "Those two are something else. I can't believe JD got Rose to do that."

Kyle had also noticed the sudden quiet and looked where it seemed to stem from. He raised a brow then laughed a little at Conner's comment. He was good at reading people but the fact that Rose was always so precise and proper when she ate hadn't escaped almost anyone that spent any time with the girl. So, when Rose has taken the bite and JD kissed her; he couldn't help but find it amusing. He turned back to Justin and Blossom. His hand was under the table and on Justin's leg but not noticeable.

Suddenly, JD was kissing her. Rose didn't resist at all; she always just fell into JD's kisses but she hadn't been expecting that. She felt her cheeks glow as Conner spoke and then she closed her eyes and shook her head for a moment.

Heath laughed; that whole thing had been amusing. He glanced at Sam who was grinning and then he realized why.

Sam heard Conner's comment. "Well, that's the best present you could have given me. Thanks, JD." Once she noticed Rose's eyes on her she held up her cell phone.

Rose's sudden realization was written all over her face, "You didn't."

"Oh, I did," Sam tapped the phone. "You really didn't think you could do that without me getting a pic of it did you."

Heath said to Sam, "You know you're sneaky."

Sam shrugged, "Yes, I know. I got one of the bite and one with the stuff on your face right before JD kissed you." She figured it best not to take a picture of the kiss.

Conner laughed again looking at Sam, "I should have thought that. I am surprised we all did not have our phone out recording it. TikTok would have blown up." He said, with an evil grin.

JD looked Rose in the eyes drawing closer to her "I am sorry about all that. but I did like it a lot." He whispered to her. "Maybe we can pick this back up when we are alone," he said with a smile still whispering.

Blossom turned red looking at JD and Rose. Back home they didn’t do public display of affection a whole lot since gossip was a big deal. She tried to eat quietly and avoid being embarrassed. Justin on the other hand was amused as he used that distraction to put his hand on Kyle’s knee for a second.

Sam laughed, "You gotta be quick about these things." She then looked at Rose and smiled.

Rose sighed but smiled, she felt the redness from her starting to fade a bit. She quietly spoke to JD. "Don't worry. I liked it too. Maybe we can."
