I've learned about making characters over the course of the year that I've been an OW member that I will list below. If anyone else has some character creation questions, or advise, we would all love to see your thoughts. Anyway...
• Make a character you believe you can write. I've ruined my experience in a few games by making characters that I did not enjoy writing. Along these lines, it helps to be able to relate to your character. If you and your character have nothing in common, writing the character will take a lot of effort, which can be needlessly stressful.
• Make a character that can contribute to the story. If you character doesn't add anything to the plot, they will quickly become irrelevant. The more necessary your character is to the overall story, the more involved you will be.
• Make your character unique. If everyone is making stoic badasses, don't make another stoic badass character. Other people will naturally be drawn to interact with your unique character.
• Don't define your character's personality too rigidly off the bat. I've generally found that I develop my characters more naturally if I am flexible about how I let my characters react to situations.
• A good way to get your character involved quickly is to incorporate another character's backstory into your character's history. This establishes a currently existing relationship between those characters.
