Dakota Fire

Lydia, after watching Finlay fall asleep, worked quickly and quietly to gather sticks and twigs. She dug a hole about a foot into the dirt in the ditch, and another hole near by the first. She then connected the two holes through a tunnel she dug. Placing the sticks and twigs in one hole, she lit it with a zippo lighter that had been tucked away in her backpack. The tree branches above the ditch would work better than expected to disperse the smoke, leaving almost no trace of someone camping out there. Once the fire was started, Lydia brought more sticks and dry wood over to it before finally sitting against a tree trunk above the ditch. Her eyelids grew heavy once she was finally able to sit and rest, but her will to survive was stronger than her exhaustion. It was going to be a long couple of hours. Lydia grabbed a thick twig and began whittling away at it with a small pocket knife to try and pass the time.
