All Hell Breaking Lose
By the time Embry got to the site, the shooting had stopped. There was a human mule cut in half by sniper fire. His eyes glared at Rainey before she was gathered up by Alex, who himself was wounded. McMahon had no face, his head blown apart by the same sniper fire.
“All hell!” Embry shouted into his radio. “I need a copter to evacuate some wounded. I need it pronto! The southernmost point of the King ranch!”
González pointed to the cliff across the river. “They had a good vantage point!”
Embry pulled an AR-15 out of the back of his truck. Turning, he saw Kate riding up on her horse. He ran up to her, yelling, “Get down! I thought I told you to stay out! Get down low!” Grabbing the reigns of her horse, Embry pulled it to a stop. He nearly pulled Kate off her horse.
Embry ran back to Gonzalez’ vehicle and jumped inside it. “Let’s go! Cross over the river! We gotta get these sonsa bitches!”
“That’s Mexico!” Gonzalez protested.
“They killed one of my men!” Embry insisted. “Wounded others! Go Dammit!”
Gonzalez obliged and drove his Jeep across the Ford of the Rio Grande. Embry help the AR-15 at the ready.
His other officer was tending to those wounded.

Sam helped Marley to get Rainey up onto Marley’s horse. He looked Marley in the eye, glad she was safe but sad for her sister. He didn’t know how bad she was wounded.
“You’ll need to ride with one hand,” Sam insisted. He took Marley’s free hand and placed it over Rainey’s wound. “You need to apply pressure here.” He placed his hand on her cheek, not realizing some of Rainey’s blood was upon the hand. “I know you can ride hard. I’ll be right behind you with him.”
Sam left Marley to ride. He got off his horse and helped Alex up on his horse. Sam jumped on behind Alex, bracing the man against his chest. Sam placed a hand over one of Alex’s wound then hightailed it out of there, following Marley.

Now across the river, Gonzalez drove around to the backside of the cliffs. Another vehicle was trying to leave. Gunfire erupted, remaining on the Mexican side as the vehicle attempting to leave opened fire on Embry and Gonzalez, with Embry returning fire. When the gunfire ended, one Mexican was dead, another captured. Gonzalez was wounded, but not deadly. They returned to the American side of the river with the captive.
