Max had to stifle a laugh and looked to River. "Well for one it's clear to me that Serenity is plenty smart and educated. Part of me wonders why her mom hired me in the first place. But I do intend to give her an education, but an actual one and not the typical curriculum that teaches people to be mindless drones."

Tam suddenly felt very exposed. She found it hard to look at him. "Yeah... And I worry he'll hurt my little brother..." She was trying to fight back tears now. "He's such a fucking monster... Half the time I just wish I could run away with my brother and leave this town behind... the other half wants to kill my father in his sleep..." She shook her head. "It's just not right..." She found the strength to reign in her emotions. "I'm sorry. Your father sounds like a real asshole..." She found herself unable to smile she simply started to drive. "Does he just hit you...? Or is it like me?"
