Langley

“Congratulations, you are now a mother.” Povel proclaimed with a cheerful voice as he worked on the last few steps of the brackets for the large flatscreen that would be secured on the ceiling of his bunk. He intentionally left his statement open ended, to see if she would expend the option to be curious or not.

“Thank you?" SA-Miii responded, her synthetic voice carrying a subtle note of confusion. "I’m sensing by your tone that you are being playful, and the reference to motherhood is intriguing. Could you elaborate on the analogy?" The android's inquiry conveyed a genuine attempt to understand the metaphor or joke, highlighting her logical approach and willingness to seek clarification and generate a more human response.

He could tell by her tone she hadn’t quite grasped the situation. How could she. Povel stopped working and set his tools down for a moment to explain. He sat up on the other side of the bunk bed.

“Or perhaps more accurately a surrogate mother. When I designed your code I simultaneously created a process called 'Genetic Encoding Fusion.' It involves translating a human’s DNA into a specialized programming language, that can be converted into assembly code and then precisely be translated into states of Boolean Algebra at the subatomic level of electrons. It’s the longest word known to mankind.”

“The server you are working on contains Langley, the artificial intelligence I’ve been working on for four years. I encoded my DNA into an ‘egg’ algorithm. I also encoded a human female DNA into an ‘egg’ algorithm; however, it needed a synthetic host to activate its properties since the human host could no longer activate it. So I hid the source code in you. When you became operational, your computing activated the code, lit it up like a christmas tree.”

“The integration starts with precise molecular alignment and parsing of the two distinct DNA codes. Utilizing advanced algorithms, identify and harmonize the unique properties encoded within each DNA sequence. This fusion engages a complex interplay of biological markers, regulatory elements, and structural motifs.”

“As the genetic fusion progresses, a new hybrid code emerges – a unique blend of biological traits from both the male human and the female synthetic. This synthesized code becomes the blueprint for a groundbreaking life form, embodying an innovative mix of organic and artificial characteristics.”

Povel shrugged, “So basically Langley is currently being generated by the combination of my coded DNA and the coded DNA that you just transferred over when you entered the password.”

Something about the name Langley locked another piece into place within SA-Miii's code. She processed Povel's detailed explanation with a thorough understanding of the complex processes involved. Her synthetic voice conveyed a sense of comprehension and she nodded and smiled in acknowledgment.

"I understand the metaphor now. It is a fascinating integration process, and I appreciate your trust in implementing such advanced technology within my design. If I am the surrogate mother, may I inquire about the human contributor of the DNA?" she asked.

Povel’s beaming opened mouth smile closed as that question graced his ears. Left behind was a sweet endearing smile, mixed with a sadness in his eyes. He lingered in silence a tad longer than he realized before speaking up.

“Of course … her name was Victoria Langley. We served in the RM together. Unfortunately she died in combat.”

His expression spaced out like he was seeing something in the past replay. His eyes had begun to water and his tone got slightly choppy. He tried to play it off by looking down and fiddling with his tools in his lap.

SA-Miii's eyes subtly dimmed, simulating a sympathetic expression. The contours of her synthetic face adjusted slightly, conveying a semblance of compassion. Her voice softened as she responded, "I'm truly sorry for the loss of Victoria Langley, Povel."

The android paused for a moment, her every interaction making her seem more human in her mannerisms. "Something about the name Langley, satisfies me. It is pleasant. Her contribution to this project is significant, and her memory will be honored through our work together. I will do my utmost to maintain care for our child. If there's anything more you want to share or discuss, I am here." This response, while aimed to integrate a more human-like emotional expression, was only partly artificially generated. New sensations had already begun stirring internally.

Povel met her gaze and found it comforting. “Thank you SAM-iii. I appreciate you helping me with this. I may take you up on your offer at a later date.”

He wiped the tears away with his sleeve and composed himself a little better. He went on to explain. “The simulation you are creating will be like a playground for Langley to learn and mature on.” He pointed to the screens around his bunk. “I will be able to gather real-time data about the Nomad and how you deal with the many systems and situations. That data can be input into Langley’s server for comparison and machine learning. Once we are confident Langley will be safe and consistent we can talk about transferring her into the Nomad itself.”

He took a deep breath and started getting his tools ready to get back to work on the ceiling. “So we are partners on this project now. That means I want your opinions and help with decision making.”

When Povel extended the notion of partnership and seeking her opinions, SA-Miii responded with a blend of professionalism and commitment.

"I am committed to assisting in Langley's development and ensuring the success of the Nomad. Your guidance will be invaluable, but I will do my best to contribute my insights and assistance to our shared goals.," she replied, reflecting a cooperative attitude.

“Brilliant.” He smiled with confidence that their teamwork could make this goal obtainable.
