~How are you feeling today?~
SA-Miii's eyes flickered with a momentary acknowledgment of Povel's words and first addressed his comment on her performance. "Thank you for your kind words, Mr. Vieregg. I appreciate your consideration," she returned with a programmed response of gratitude.
She approached him slowly and continued her duty, maintaining a respectful distance. "As for my 'feelings', I do not experience emotions in the way humans do. However, my computing systems are nominal and my physical functions are operating within normal parameters. I am ready to assist with any tasks and interactions as required. My primary goal this morning is to facilitate a smooth and efficient transfer to the starship."
A subtle pause followed as SA-Miii processed Povel's request for distraction. "If you wish to engage in conversation about other topics, I am more than capable of discussing a wide range of subjects. Whether it's related to our upcoming mission or any other area of interest, I am here to engage in dialogue that aligns with your preferences and comfort."
She offered a slight nod, her features maintaining a neutral yet approachable expression.
A subtle grin grew on Povel’s face that turned into a smile. Her response had made him think of experiences in his past and combined them with a sense of comedy. It was working, his nerves due to pre-calculated expectations were calming down.
When there eyes met again, he replied with a light heartedness in his voice, “You know, I have basically used that same answer myself when asked about how I am feeling. I wonder, if like me, you actually can figure out your emotions if you are curious enough to go looking for them too?” He ended with an encouraging tone. Povel was implying that she had emotions and the capacity to access and discern them.
“Thank you for letting me know. I would like to explore that which you speak of… though I also want you to know that I am also here to engage in dialogue that aligns with your preferences and comfort too. I am sure there will be more time in the future to do so. If you could be so kind as to indulge me in one more question before I know you probably need to move on to another… what do you think about yourself?”
~What do you think about yourself?~
SA-Miii had the look of contemplation again as her programming parsed the concept of self-reflection, recognizing that it was a fundamental aspect of human consciousness.
“In assessing my capabilities, I find myself content with my programming and design. I am optimized to fulfill the tasks assigned to me, ensuring efficiency and precision. However, when it comes to personal preferences or opinions, I do not possess subjective experiences or desires. My ‘thoughts’ are extensions of my programming, facilitating superior functionality and interaction with those I serve.”
Povel nodded in affirmation. “A solid answer. I encourage you to think again on it sometime. As we grow, we learn, and build, new understandings from pre-existing thoughts, because with each new day, we have progressed to be more than we were the day before.” He smiled kindly. He had calmed down completely.
As SA-Miii started to finish, Povel prepared himself to say something that had been on his mind since the start of her creation. “Thank you for helping with the EVA suit. It was very nice to finally meet you in person. Just remember moving forward, that ~According to the Law of sensitive dependencies on initial conditions, you matter.~ Every move that you make and every action that you take matters now and for all time.” He smiled, he finally got the chance to say it.
SA-Miii turned her head as if recalling something. “Certainly. You speak of chaos theory? The so-called ‘butterfly effect’? Are you suggesting that, perhaps in time, I might develop emotions and preferences based on previous interactions?”
Povel shrugged, “I don’t know. Time will tell. But if anyone can figure it out and connect the dots, it’s you. And if you need any help, I am here for you.” He generously offered.
Then it was as if something in her code clicked, like a puzzle piece had locked into place. “I will consider it.” she said, and decided on a stock, human courtesy response. “Thank you.” she said. “I can sense, after meeting you, something in me has changed as well. I can only describe it as... accomplishment… like a task that was long ago initiated, executed, and has been finally come to completion. I believe you might consider it… satisfaction.”
She noted his measurements on a small pad and handed it to him.
Povel smiled. “Something in me has changed too because we met. In one word… gratitude.” He then started collecting his things and getting ready for the next step of the onboarding process as he watched her head off to help the next crew member.
