Learning and Teaching

Kyle saw Justin approach and he talked with him for a little while before saying. "Hey, you good with Dawn joining us to learn to surf? I sort of promised her like a week ago and I'd feel bad backing out on her now."

Justin looked at Kyle and smiled as he nodded. He was glad to spend time with Kyle again even if it wasn't just the two of them. Well since it was in broad daylight and in front a large crowd, he figured it would be better to play it cool till the sun went down. From his past experiences, he found that flaunting his lifestyle in front of others had a tendency to work against him. Its not that he had trust issues with others, but more or less he didn't enjoy the witless wonders who felt they needed to voice their selfish and useless opinions like they were the Kings and Queens of the World. So after sizing up Kyle he spoke up.

Justin: Sure the more the merrier. I'll go last so I can see your teaching style.

Kyle smiled at him and said "Great. I'll go talk to her."

Kyle went over to Dawn. "Hey, are you ready to get started?"

Dawn glanced at Kyle and making sure to keep her voice down, though they weren't really near anyone, she didn't know how open Justin was. Actually, she thought if she wasn't in the LGBTQ community she might not have guessed anything. "You sure? I mean I can find someone else to teach me if I need to."

"It's fine, really." Kyle commited. "I asked and Justin is ok with it."

"Ok, if you're sure." Dawn raised a brow at him.

"Stop it. We're good." Kyle said firmly but smiled at her. He wouldn't have gone back on his word to her and he was going to try to not make her feel like a third wheel.

She smiled at him. "Ok, where do I start."

Kyle said to both Dawn and Justin. "You both can just watch what I do, first and then I'll work individually with each of you. If you look out at the people going into the surf they are on their stomachs. That's how you start is on your stomach, you use your arms to get to the waves, then you'll go up to your knees, and then when you're ready you'll go to standing." He proceeded to show them what he meant by demonstrating it on the beach, on his surfboard. "Dawn you can try first"

Dawn proceeded to get on the surfboard laying down and she went to kneeling, when she got to standing her helped her position herself correctly. It was several times of practicing those moves. When Kyle said "Ok, that's the basics. Now, it's time to try it in the water. " He led Dawn to the water and she was on one surfboard, Kyle on the other and he worked with her in the water. She, of course, got rolled by the waves a time or two but she did get to standing. He let her stay out there as long as she wanted but he wasn't that far away from her. She lasted about 15 minutes and then said she wanted a break. When they got out[ of the water, he told her she should rinse off on the outside shower and take off the wet suit, she had a bathing suit on underneath. She could do more later if she wanted but it could get really hot in the wet suit.

He then turned to Justin. "So, are you still up for this?"

Blossom was amazed by Kaylee's experiences at such an young age. Blossom felt a little intimidated since her biggest adventure was coming to this school. Aside from that it was cow tipping and swimming at the local lake. Back home she was not very popular and aside from cheerleading she was just another face in the small crowd at her small town.

Blossom: Ummmm. Dot Map, Montana. This is my first time at a beach......well its my first time away from home as well.

"Oh, I hear Montana is beautiful," Kaylee said. "Well, I hope you're having fun then." She was used to the beach but knew not everyone had had that opportunity. "Surfing shouldn't be that hard for you. You already must have balance because you have to be on people's shoulders and being a flyer you have to be coordinated, those are the two things that help the most." She tried to explain the things Blossom might need to know. "You just have to get used to the idea that the ocean is less predictable than standing on a person and to not try to fight it if you get thrown off. It's better to go with the water that against it." Kaylee pointed out someone surfing in the water that obviously knew what they were doing. "See there, that girl, she is pretty good. With enough practice, it's not that hard to get that good." Her focus back to Blossom. "So, if you're ready to learn we can get started but if you need a few more minutes that's fine."
