Lead in
JD looked back at Rose and she was talking to Kyle. She had changed some not hiding the fact she could be interested.
Rose looked over to Kyle and said to him. "So, are you used to beach parties?'
Kyle nodded. "I'm from LA. I think kids there go to beach parties before they can walk."
Something about Kyle made JD wonder about the guy the way he acted around girls was off. JD dismiss it at first but now he just saw it again. Ether he was not interested in her or no girl at this school. JD knew San Diego was different than LA, but the beach was the same way. “Did you live on the beach too Kyle? Are house in San Diego was 50 yards for the ocean up on hill. Now we live 20 minutes away I wish we could find a house on the beach again” says JD asking to get to know the guy better.
Kyle didn't realize that anyone else had picked up on Rose's interest; he also didn't realize anyone had picked up on his disinterest. He wasn't one to hid the fact that he was gay, he saw no reason to do that for himself. He also didn't judge others were just weren't where he was.
JD seemed to get in on the conversation asking about LA. Kyle shook his head. "No, we lived in the hills overlooking the ocean though. Even with traffic, it was only about 15 minutes or so from the beach though. My old school was a little closer than my house. It was common that the students would go to the beach, after school."
Many of the more wealthy people lived in the hills; it was kind of known for that. Kyle wasn't saying it to be snobby; that just happened to be where he lived, where he had spent his whole life. It was said that way.
Rose had to admit she wasn't sure what to think. Maybe, Kyle wasn't interested in her. That would be OK. It was a minor crash; she liked him. She thought wasn't sure if he or anyone else had picked up on it. Except for Sam who already knew.
Sam was listening to all of this going on. She was now wondering about Kyle, herself. She certainly didn't want Rose to end up hurt if he didn't like her but she also knew Rose well enough to know she could take it.
Kyle then spoke up again. "I've been to San Diego. It's nice there. A little quieter than LA. The surfing is great as the beaches don't seem as crowded." It was a lead for someone to ask him about surfing. He didn't seem like a surfer. If someone would take the bait, he'd have a lead in to telling people he was gay. Then Rose would know no harm done
