But now Idwal noticed that it was headed for a huge and menacing
shape that had apparently loomed out of nowhere. "What the?" began
Idwal as the onboard computer chimed in with.
"I think you ought to know that a planetoid mass has been detected
400 parasecs off the port bow."
"Like your twenty seconds too late!" snarled Idwal as he attempted to
heave the lumbering frieghter up round and away from a mass that
looked like it had bad karma written all over it.

"John do something"
"...." Keats was staring blankly at the floor.
"John! Come on, snap outta it"
"... the.. it... dead... both of them..." He'd turned pale.
"Come on, you have training for this"
"No i don't... i never went to the academy... i stole my way in" John
was completely in a trance. He kept replaying the scene in his head,
each time adding more detail.. sometimes he imagined what it must of
been like inside the ship as it turned into a blazing inferno.
"What? Look, come on!"
He grabbed him by the collar and shook him, but John was limp to
touch.
"Flight Leuitenant Johnathon Keats, stand up NOW! Theres plenty of
time to reminise after weere dead to, but for now focus!"
Idwall poiinted to the monitor where the shost liek ships could till
be made out.
"THEY are what caused them to die, THEY are the ones responsible and
THEY are the ones who will pay!"
The colour returned to Johns face, his normal slightly pale
complexion from being without natural sunlight for so long was now
replaced by a beetred look. He stood, with fire behind his eyes as if
some daemonic Ifritti had possesed him. He looked at Idwal and smiled
ever so slightly.
"Ok then.. i gotta plan.. but youl need to put on your space suit..."
"Why?"
"The engines are designed for space usage, and therefore are not
strong enough this close to a gravity well of that size" he indicated
the planet.
"But, if we overload the engines on one side, cut power to the other
and punture the compressed air canisters, they should give us just
enough turn to 2at least give us a comfortable landing"
"Are you sure it will work?"
John smiled and clenched his fist.
"If it works or doesnt doesnt concern me... but maybe.. just
maybe..." he looked at the ground again, sincerity in this eyes.
"Maybe is i save your life.. it will be enough to make up for the
terrible things ive done in my life.. and maybe... maybe St. Peter
wont be so hard on me... I was a poor pilot and mno better a man, but
i loved my wife.. and i dont think i could bare being apart from her
for eternity... so maybe.. if this works..."
Idwall nodded, not completely sure what he meant, but he got the jist
of it...

"Hmmm.... maybe i shouldnt of removed the shield battery... still, it
ried to tell him... and he'l thank me in the end"
He looked towards alarge piece of equiptment. It was fairly
patchwork, with wires hanging out sporadically.
"It'l be worth it in the end... which reminds me..."
He fiddled with a PDA and typed in a reminder.
"There... il get a shot of com-nanos ready for him, hopefully the
nerve suppression will calm him down whe... if he gets back"
He looked at the piece of tech again. The holo-board next to it had a
scrapy diagram on it with the words "PTE prototype propulsion sytem"
clearly labelled.
"Well.. it wouldnt work without this particular shield battery.. god
bless the space legion"
he pulle dout a dog eared roll up , half smoked, and lit it with a
small arc welder.
