Anyway, shall we go save the galaxy?

Amber leaned against the back wall of the escape pod and slid to the
floor.
"It's not fair really. Life is out to get me I swear it...." Amber
groaned.
"hey, i'm here too, it's not as if everythings going right for me
either." Jack said, slouching onto the seats against the wall of the
escape pod. "John's my friend too" he added.
"As much as i hate to admit it.... He was.... he was more than a
friend to me." She said.
The Pod touched down with a metalic tang.
"hmm?" jack grunted, "what d'you mean?" he asked, having no idea where
this could go.
"what did we hit?" jack said, leaning to the window to look outside.
"I'm a keats too" she said, pulling the chain with the ring attached
to it from around her neck. "I thought you knew." she said.
Jacks eyes opened wide. "ya what?" he said, "ok, that gives one
explanation where all my savings went when that love virus was around
last year..." he thought, "but... i don't get it... why didn't he tell
me?" he asked no one in particular. "and why wasn't i his best man?"
he thought out loud.
Amber blushed a deep crimson colour.
"We got drunk... Very drunk. Then we" She coughed slightly "I don't
remember actually getting married, but John does. Waking up the next
morning... omg I was so hungover...."
Jack smiled "we've all been there" he said. then he began laughing.
"so i've been his uncle for how long?" he asked, before getting up to
open the door of the escape pod.
"Just over a year and a month. I still dont see you as my Uncle you
know..... its really strange." She got up and walked over to the door
by Jack.
"no?" he said, "we'll have to sort that out" he said, putting an arm
around her before hitting the door release button. "when we get to
parrotts, drinks are on me" he added.
"Whatever you say Uncle Jack." Amber giggled and suddenly felt quite
childish, growing up as fast as she had sometimes played with her mind
a bit.
"thats more like it" he said, smiling. "now where actually are we?" he
asked, stepping out into the unknown.
A large compound streached out as far as the eye could see in all
directions. It was so large that some of the planet fragments had
settled up in orbit around the gigantic structure.
They stood there, looking at the huge wall in front of them,
completely devoid of features, a perfectly smooth surface. jack looked
around, "do you think this is some kind of weapon?" he asked, looking
out into the asteroid field around them.
"You think these things are intelligent enough to build this? It could
be the Hymies...." Amber gazed out into space as a spare part of
plannet was caught by the gravititional pull of the platform and
crashed into the smooth surface breaking a hole into the side and
plunging deep into the compound creating a tunnle as it went. The two
were showered in debris.
"Thats handy...." Amber said as if nothing had happened, but covered
in dust, plannet remains and metal fragments.
"yeah, very handy." jack said, "shall we?" he asked, looking into the
hole. "i hope this isn't a bug station, this doesn't have a biological
feel to it." he added.
"I dont get it" Amber said out loud as they examined the room they
were in, punctured in two places by the asteroid.
"Get what?" Jack asked
"There are no doors." Amber said.
"maybe its an automated station?" Jack hazarded, "or maybe the doors
are just hidden?" he guessed, "anyway, no point thinking about that,
we've got a way in, and we need to find a way to get back to the
dwarf" he said, stepping through the hole.
"We need to find a communications console or something to get that
mining ship down here." Amber said
"this place gives me the shivers more than a quiet night at parrotts."
jack said, jumping to the side as a piece of metal fell off of the
wall. "i hope we find a way out soon." he almost prayed.
Amber hacked into a console on the wall and brought up schematics of
the thing they were on. jack stopped and looked over Amber's shoulder
"whats up?" he asked before he'd seen the screen. "uhh, is this whole
station a huge cannon?" he asked
"This isn't just a huge cannon Uncle Jack. This is a plannet
destroying cannon!" Amber punched in some buttons on hte display and
brought up charts of the weapons range and activity. Jack leaned
further over, and looked to the edge of the
cannon's range. "Is that Earth?" he asked, pointing to a system on
the chart.
"yes" said Amber plainly, "the other side of the galaxy, this cannon
is a fort, according to this, it was built here, just to destroy this
planet..."
"what? are you saying these guys are powerful enough to build a huge
cannon on the bug doorstep?" Jack asked,
"about that, yeah. if they can find a way of moving this, they'll be
able to take over the galaxy, we have to stop it!" she exclaimed,
turning to Jack.
"I'm sending out a comms signal to any ships out there who might hear
this to come help us with any weapons they have." Amber said,
downloading the information onto a PDA. She flicked through the
schematics again.
"According to this, if we can get to the central chamber, we can
overload the input to the cannon and cause a big explosion. That would
mean someone has to stay behind and deactivate the override..."
"you mean one of us will have to stay to 'go down with the ship'
right?" Jack asked, Amber looked at him, and nodded.
"i'll stay." Jack said, "Theres no way i could let my neice sacrifice
herself." he said, "now wheres this central core?" he asked, amassing
all the courage he had, but even that wasn't enough to stop him from
shaking.
"Don't be stupid Jack. You have Melissa! She'll never forgive me if I
let you do this!" Amber growled at her Uncle.
"and you're married you know, i couldn't let you go either." Jack
said, and could feel an argument brewing.
"but this isn't the place to argue, whaddya say we both become heroes
and do it together?" he suggested.
"My husband is dead!" She yelled. "But I like that idea." She added at
the end.
"i've seen john get out of worse scrapes" Jack said, "we both grew up
in neo-stroud, we've been in tougher spots than hell itself and made
it out with barely a scratch. John wouldn't give in" He said, "he's
still out there." he said.
"anyway, shall we go save the galaxy?" Jack said, smiling.
"that has a nice ring to it eh?" he added.
