A phoenix, or just some annoying seagul?

Silence. Nothing but utter silence throughout most of the gigantic,
aptly named Blue Dwarf. Silence until steel toecapped boots make their
classic sound on the metal floors, The butt of a rifle appears round a
corner, followed by a man holding it over his shoulder. "dammit... i
want something to shoot..." Jack began. "here bugs, here bugs! i've
got a nice banana for you!!" he said, lying. He had no such banana,
but he thought it might work anyway...
Amber stared at the scanner not quite believing what hse had just seen
occur. The flaming wreck of The Endymion spiralled into the oblivion
of the atmosphere and exploded in a hail of fire that would make a
special effects crew die happy.
The lack of any movement had pushed jack over the edge, he needed
coffee to stay awake, luckily for him, the security offices were just
around the corner, opening the door he saw the scanner screen in the
far corner, a blip disappearing, with a readout next to it. He
wandered over casually, to see the label next to the missing blip
'Endymion' The coffee cup that was in Jacks hand at this point fell
to the floor, smashing. He felt a nerve pulse instinctively fly to
his nano's,
"john, you there?" he said, nothing but static returned. He stood
there for what felt like an hour.
Amber jolted back into action and spoke down John's frequency.
"John?.... John you there?" she was met with static. Her stomach did
a small gymnastic routine and her heart stopped to watch the show for
a moment.
The hour in his mind droned on, at the end of it, the label was still
on the screen, even though it was meant to disappear after five
minutes. "Amber? did you see that?" he asked, slowly, his mind still
not really getting what had happened.
She stared at the screen for what seemed like an age, keeping John's
frequency open incase he said something. It was after about five
minutes they suddenly cut out compleatly.
"Jack did you see that" She said down the nano's at exactly the same
time as Jack did.
"is this a malfunction? i can't see any other ships in the area..." he
said, his mind trying to find a way round this, without losing his
best friend.
"He can't be gone. I don't believe it. The scanners are right... but
he must be still out there..... he must be.."
"I dunno... he's not one to just abandon his ship... that things his
pride & joy..." he began. "he cares about that more than anything."
"I know"Amber growled over the nano's "Look, i'm gonna take a midget
ant go look for him. Meet me in Hanger 5 if you wanna come along." She
cut the transmition and headed for the hanger to ready the midget.
"i'll be there" he said, turning and beginning his sprint to the
hangar before the door had managed to open, he slammed into it face
first. "ahh smeg" he said, his nose now bleeding, but the door had
opened, so he began his sprint again, leaving his post behind, and
getting to the hangar as fast as his legs would carry him.
Amber powered the shuttle out of the hanger and into space so fast if
Jay had seen her he'd have taken her liscence off her. She glared at
the scanners.
"Hey, whats that?" Jack asked, seeing the blip of the mining vessel on
the scanner. He hit the readout button, it gave them the details, "you
think that would have picked him up?" he asked, getting more hopeful
every second.
There was a series of pinging noises on the hull of the midget.
"No. This storm will have finished him and that rusty ship of his
off." she mumbled
"hey, come on, a person is a small target, and anyway, his ship had
shields, they can handle a few bullet asteroids" he said, seeing the
faint blips of reckage on the scanners. "call up that ship, ask what
happened" he said, reaching for the controls, but he couldn't quite
reach them from his seat, not wanting to undo the seatbelt for fears
of Ambers reckless flying.
