Lt. Jason Smegg - "It's a magic gate"
Main engineering
After the away mission which thankfully Smegg did not go down on, those
bugs sounded dangerous
Lt. Smegg was performing routine maintenance on the spare warp inductor
coils, checking them for any imperfections in case the main drive failed,
when Steev skipped into the room.
"I'm going to make a transdimensional portal, I'm going to make a
transdimensional portal," Steev said to himself in a singsong voice.
The engineering chief looked up from his work. "A what?" he asked.
"A transdimensional portal. Something we saw on the surface, this 'Ace
Rimmer' guy had it and was going to do something with it until he got
eaten by a giant bug," Steev explained.
"Oh. Whatever," Smegg commented, turning back to his work.

Main engineering
20 minutes later
Smegg could hear moaning coming from the other side of the engineering
section. "What is it?" he cried. "I'm trying to work here!"
"Oh no," said Steev, "this is harder than it looked! I'll never manage
this! There's no blueprints and half the wires are going in loops here!"
Smegg walked over to him and took a look at the project. "Well, I suppose
I can give you a hand. Hmm, this seems to be a highly miniaturized
version of our own warp drive."
"Oh, really?" Steev perked up again. "Now I get it! But what about those
wires going in circles?"
Smegg laughed. "Uh, did you forget Electronics 101?"
"What?" Steev asked. "Are you calling me stupid?"
Smegg thought for a moment. "Well... uhh... not really! What I really
meant to say is, umm, that you seem to have forgotten in the excitement
of the moment what a 'circuit' is!"
"Oh!" exclaimed Steev. "Silly me! Hahahahaha! How funny!" He turned away
to look at the device he was repairing himself.
"Here, let me have another look," said Smegg.
"No, I'll work on it myself," said Steev, cradling the device. "Got a
cupboard handy?"
