Artemis fired at Lindstrom, narrowly missing the cyborg renegade's head. Lindstrom turned around and returned fire, narrowly missing Artemis. The two continued to exchange missed shots, neither of them being good enough with a gun to hit the other while being fired at, or stupid enough to stand still and line up a shot, making them vulnerable.
"You never were a good shot Artemis!" Lindstrom yelled, ducking shots from his nemesis.
"What the fuck are you talking about you applegated fool!? You're just as bad as I am" Artemis snapped back, ducking from poorly line up shots.
The two carried on a conversation, ducking behind cover as the other fired and exchanging witty banter.
"There's no way in hell you're getting out of this alive Lars!" Artemis yelled.
"Hah! I've survived the Q-Bomb, the Roo, the Space Corps, and I'll be damned if you're going to get me!" Lindstrom yelled back.
"You're a coward and a traitor you bastard! The fact that you've survived this long is nothing short of serendipity!"
"I SURVIVED BECAUSE I WORKED FOR IT! SOME OF US DIDN'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF BEING FROZEN FOR THREE MILLION YEARS WHILE THE REST OF US WERE SLAVES TO FUCKING HAMSTERS!"
"Like I wanted to be frozen! If you hated being a prisoner so much than why did you open a damn prison?"
"Because it's dimensional travelers like you and your stupid 'Dwarfer' pals that ruined my life! The Roo, the Queue, that bastard Kenneth, Thomas Plisken, hell, even you and that asshole Tom Clarke! If it wasn't for that dimensional drill we wouldn't have had half of these problems! I wanted to get you time-travelling bastards out of the stream and protect the sanctity of time! I knew it was only a matter of time before the infamous Jay Chrysler and his merry fucking band of savages ended up here!"
"But why me! We were best friends, you were like a brother to me Lars!"
"BECAUSE YOU AND YOUR FALSE FRIENDSHIP IS WHAT DESTROYED MY CAREER!"
"You seem to be forgetting who had to live with the consequences of the accident! While you were being a pet to the Roo I was living with the shame and ridicule of your damned accident! I spent years thinking that I killed my friends and colleagues! And you know what happened after I spared your damn life? I watched friends die, I went on a fuckload of adventures that pushed me to the edge of fucking insanity, and I spent months trying to tell my wife why we couldn't have a family! Meanwhile you're living the high life as some sort of dimensional hero!"
"IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT YOU!"
Artemis growled. He popped up and fired wildly at Lindstrom, who had to scurry to find new cover. Lindstrom disappeared.
Artemis looked around for him.
Jay walked up on the platform. He saw Artemis looking around, and Lindstrom pop out of a corner.
"ARTEMIS!" Artemis looked at Jay briefly, but it was long enough for Lindstrom to fire a high-velocity round at Artemis. The round sliced through Artemis' abdomen.
Artemis cried out and pain and fell to the ground. Jay tried to rush at Lindstrom but was caught by a force field, and was trapped in a small bubble.
"FUCK YOU LINDSTROM!" Jay yelled.
"Quiet! I'll get to you in a second" Lindstrom said, advancing on Artemis.
Artemis was laying in a pool of blood and hydraulic fluid. The shot would have killed a regular man, but Artemis' implants had saved him, taking the brunt of the damage. He would live, but not for long.
Artemis starting pushing away from Lindstrom, who walked up at him, laughing. Artemis wanted desperately to do something, but his body wracked with pain. But there was a dull pain in his back that stood out....
"Wait" Artemis groaned.
"Wait? WAIT?! The great Dr. Pritchard, the sixth of the great Pritchard scientists. Father of countless creations, Guild of Science poster boy, Charon Labs majority shareholder and lead researcher, owner of a dozen PhD's, is asking me to wait? Are you scared Artemis? Scared, scared of dying? I do believe you once told me that death had no meaning"
Artemis's bloody hand slipped on a puddle of hydraulic fluid. The blue fluid mixed with the red blood to create a morbid purple mix.
Artemis held up his hand and started laughing, weakly. Lindstrom started laughing too.
Jay looked on as the two madmen laughed....
Artemis reached into his back pocket, and drew a blood covered pistol. He rapidly fired it at Lindstrom, the bullets slicing through his metal body in a dramatic display of sparks and smoke. Lindstrom hit the ground, Artemis' pistol kept clicking as he tried to fire non-existent rounds into his nemesis.
Artemis saw Lindstrom move. He crawled over to the downed cyborg, who was lying in a puddle of dark blue liquid.
"Alexis...please...she needs me" Lindstrom said, begging to be spared for Alexis' sake.
"Fuck you" Artemis snarled, slamming the but of the pistol into Lindstrom's chest reactor. Lindstrom convulsed, and went limp.
Artemis stared at the cyborg. This man had once been a brother to him, and the only man he ever considered an intellectual equal. That man was dead, and had been replaced by an evil cyborg madman. This was the Lindstrom that Artemis had created by being merciful, and he had destroyed him by being relentless. The one time Artemis showed humanity he created a monster, he gave an innocent man a second chance, a second chance that would turn that man into a monster. When Artemis made a decision as his former self, the cold, calculating, and inhuman self, he righted that wrong. All of the time he spent on Blue Dwarf trying to better himself, all of it backfired. This was the result of that betterment. The paradox left an empty void in Artemis' head.
The forcefield holding Jay flickered and died. Jay rushed to Artemis.
"Oh shit...are you fit to travel?" Jay said, looking at Lindstrom, then back to Artemis.
Artemis nodded and held out his hand. Jay helped him up, and noticed that Artemis had left something in his hand. It was a small vial.
"It's a vial of...the industrial gelf...DNA...the only remaining copy of the master DNA. It...was what Lindstrom was using...to make the clones...but he didn't know the correct process, likely why he needed...me. I figured...he took Katrina from you...we're taking his family from him. I'll be damned if that...bastard's legacy lives on" Artemis rasped.
Jay slipped the vial into his pocket, he wasn't sure what he wanted to do with it, but he could figure that out later.
"Let's go find the others" Jay said, helping Artemis towards the turbolift.
"ALERT: WARDEN HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED FROM SYSTEM. ALERT: NO REMAINING COMMAND OFFICERS. SELF-DESTRUCT INITIATED, PLEASE EVACUATE THE STATION IMMEDIATELY. ALL ESCAPE VEHICLES HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED. TWENTY MINUTES UNTIL DETONATION"
<tag>
Lindstrom is defeated, Jay and Artemis are heading to meet up with the others. The station is twenty minutes from destruction, find the time drive and get us home!
Artemis is grievously wounded and can't really help at the moment. His implants will keep him alive long enough to reach Blue Dwarf. The implants are damaged and the wounds can't heal on their own.
