Robo Redemption
WHO: Garr Bedge
WHERE: Blue Dwarf
WHEN: After Justin awoke the crew
Everyone was suitably worried, after Garr's previous violent awakenings, that he would have struck someone dead within seconds of awakening. However, during their time stuck in Doombringer's simulated Hell, Alex – remembering what Garr had done to his friend Gomez – had found a few minutes to debug the programming from the Simulant's mind in order to stop another murder happening. However, in retaliation for the death of the Spanish technician, he'd programmed Garr to hear a minute of easy listening music instead. For a Simulant, this was the worst form of torture imaginable. To this end, whilst the others were nursing their bruises, Garr spent a full minute bashing his head against a bulkhead in agony.
“MAKE IT STOP!!!” he screamed at the top of his synthetic lungs, trying to force the tune out of his head with another rhythmic smash against the wall.
“Not nice is it?” smirked Alex bitterly. Turning away from the Simulant, he attended to the body of Jelena. He hadn't had a chance to really get to know her, but her death still hurt him.
The music coming to a stop, Garr refocused his attention on Alex. His newly installed guilt chip went into overdrive as he saw the man's grief over the dead woman. He knew Alex would always hold a grudge against him for Gomez's murder, but since self-termination was now no longer an option, he didn't know how to make his Human master feel better. As the others returned to their stations to prepare for the incoming meteor storm the jittery hologram he had learned was called Justin was panicking about, Alex and he were left alone to attend to Jelena's body.
“I'm sorry for your loss, master” Garr said morosely, fighting his latent Simulant instincts to laugh at the death of a filthy Human.
“Just shut up, alright!” shouted Alex “you've caused enough death and destruction around here already!”. He sighed and looked down at the body before him. “We barely even got to know her, and then she was gone. This always smegging happens on this smegging ship.” he despaired.
From deep in his memory banks, an idea rumbled towards Garr's mind.
“Listen, mate, why don't ya go down to the 'ologram simulation suite? We can boot up an 'ologram of the dead bird. She'll be right a' rain in no time.”
Alex glared at the Simulant for a moment, and realised that he had a point. Jelena's hologram disc should be in the library, if it had survived the years of dereliction. It was worth a shot. As Garr casually picked up Jelena's body and moved towards the medi-bay to lay her at rest in the morgue.
A while later, Garr and Alex found themselves in the Hologram Library. The years hadn't been kind, and the place was covered in dust and debris. Many discs were strewn about the floor and the place looked like it had been repeatedly burgled. Moving off in towards the section would should have theoretically stored Jelena's disc, Alex left the Simulant to his own devices. Making sure Alex was out of the way, Garr lumbered off towards the section marked 'G'. A few minutes later, he returned to entrance of the Library to find Alex waiting for him.
“I found the disc” said Alex briskly “I think we should go try and find a light bee that's still working and boot her up.”
“A most excellent idea, o' dirty 'ooman master” said Garr obsequiously.
“Right” said Alex, confused as ever by the deranged mechanoid's idiosyncratic speech pattern.
If he'd bothered to ask what the Simulant had been up to, or indeed ordered him to empty his pockets, he'd have found something that would have driven him into a murderous rage against the machine. Because Garr had been looking for a disc of his own. A disc he'd found in a dusty jewel case labelled '011622218 – Gomez, A.”
<What does Garr want with Gomez's disc?>
