Second Annual Writing Improvement Month Hosted by Starbase 118
Painters wash their brushes. Carpenters sweep up sawdust. If your medium is the written word, there’s no reminder that it’s time for a bit of upkeep and reflecting on the craft. That’s why this February, UFOP: StarBase 118 will host its annual Writing Improvement Month. The month-long event covers topics from advancing a plot to writing alien species and includes tutorials, writing samples, and downloadable resources. Each week focuses on a different element of writing: overall writing improvement, setting scenes, building characters, and plot. A new article or resource will be released each day of February, bringing with it an opportunity to further develop your individual style as a writer.
The schedule also includes time with special guests throughout the month, professional authors including:
Peter Watts– The author of the Rifters trilogy, Blindsight, and more joins us for a Q&A session on writing.
Melinda Snodgrass – Author of Star Trek: The Next Generation Episodes “The Measure of a Man” – “Up the Wrong Ladder” – “The Ensigns of Command” – “The High Ground”, and the author behind This Case is Gonna Kill Me and Box Office Poison.
Other events include a fun grammar test to refresh basic skills, a questionnaire to develop complex characters, prompts help overcome writer’s block, and a surprise contest to be announced at the beginning of the month. Each week offers a look at one of the top simulations written by the group. The group’s senior members will also host IRC Chats open to the public. These events offer a unique opportunity to connect with other writers, both professional and hobbyist, including members of the UFOP: Starbase 118 simulation group.
These events and more are sure to unlock something new within any writer. The schedule of events includes something to challenge your writing every day of the month. To get involved, join us for any one (or more) of the events or contact Fleet Captain Kalianna Nicholotti at starlitwonder@hotmail.com for more information.
