He avoids any existing tracks and approaches from the head side of the body. Drawing his sword he taps the body with the side of the blade while standing as far back as possible. He's not so much worried that he or she is alive, but more that some venomous desert creature might be taking shelter under the body. Moving an arm or leg with the side of his blade might do enough to disturb it.

Assuming nothing happens, he gets closer in order the turn the body and confirm that he or she is really dead.
