Sniffing out...?
Amdir frowned.
“You search for a necromancer?” Amdir asked. “Then you and your companions are powerful indeed…or else very foolish. We shall see.”
Amdir and Naurfast took station alongside Miles as he began to walk back towards the rest of his companions,. It was an easy walking pace through the snow back to the party, which gave Amdir a few moments to think. She had no plan, really other than to meet this part and assess them as allies or a threat to be measured and dealt with. Beyond that, she was uncertain what to do. If this group was indeed going after a necromancer, a threat she and Naurfast would have no chance of defeating, then perhaps it was wise to join them to help defeat it. Otherwise, fleeing was obviously the best course, no matter how distasteful it would be.
Naurfast’s sudden stop and crouch, jolted Amdir out of her thoughts. She was staring at the landscape ahead of them, sniffing the air.
“What is it?” Amdir asked, although she had a good idea what it was already. Naurfast had probably picked up the scent of somebody under cover ahead of them. Naurfast’s ability to sniff out creatures lying in ambush had saved both her and Amdir countless times from surprise attack. The only question was, were they also friends, like Miles here or something else. Naurfast’s head changed direction slightly as she zeroed in on the scent. Then she took a single step towards where she smelled whomever it was, pointing the location out to her rider.
Hmmmm, perhaps they were not as foolish as I originally thought, Amdir noted to herself.
Amdir turned to Miles and explained. “Naurfast senses somebody lies hidden ahead of us…a friend of yours? Perhaps in rearguard?”
Amdir then gripped the hilt of her shashka and drew it. As she did so, a coating of ice covered the blade.
“Whomever you are hiding out in front of us among the rocks,” Amdir shouted. “It would be wise to reveal yourself. We know you are there.”
Amdir and Naurfast awaited a response from the hidden person or an explanation from her companion.
