In the Maze
-Dalen Capital, Lower Quarter. Night, 2 DSTR
With her sabre out, Kalena looked in at the slaves imprisoned in the various cells, searching for the missing slave girl who had been abducted from her estate, as well as for potential ambushers that might be lying in wait. She also knelt down and every few feet examined the wooden floor of the corridor for any sign of tracks, specifically pawprints left by the hounds.
She rose abruptly and looked past Kline's shoulder as she heard the tell-tale footfalls of someone running ahead of them. It could easily have been one of the Emerald Scarves trying to bait them into a reckless charge. When the hall came to a T, she saw that the other hallways looked all the same, as if having been designed to confuse.
“Should we split up?” Kline asked.
Accustomed to working alone, Kalena was about to suggest that they do split up to cover more ground, but Lafayette shook his head and explained: "Better if we just stagger our team. One small group then a the other a few feet back. Watching the rear, if anything jumps out at the front or the rear team they have equal back up. Back to Back, like watching a camp at night. Besides we are bound to get more lost that way. We just need someone to watch the entrance and stop anyone who tries to leave."
“That's a good point," Kalena agreed at the notion of having a rear guard. She was starting to have deja vu of the raid on Jocelynn's Inn in which the fugitive she and Oruvand were after had somehow been able to slip past them.
"I don't think it would be good to split up," Gularzob interjected. "It would increase the chances of getting lost and the mystery hasn't been solved. Splitting up could lead to mistrust in the other group which could lead to accidental and needless tragedy."
"Well, that's settled then," Kalena said. "We shall stick together."
Lafayette came up to Kline, holding out his hand in a fist. Something balled up in it. "You should take one of these," he suggested. "I do not know what feeling you have for using tricks to win but I say in this circumstance it would be fine. You just throw that to the floor as hard as you can and it will burst into a blinding light. Might disorientate us for a moment but the Drow will be blinded for far longer," Lafayette explained, placing the small bomb in Kline's hand.
“That won't start a fire, will it?” Kalena asked with concern. “The last thing we need is this whole place going up like kindling. If the hounds were to die like that it's safe to say the Queen would do the same to me. I also don't want any evidence to be lost. We need to find out exactly who owns and operates this establishment so we can have a very up-close chat with them.”
