Teaming up

Kalena's finely arched brows lifted as she digested all of what Oruvand told her. So the wanted murderer was holed up at the Inn? Unless of course the man slipped out during the night when Oruvand had been fast asleep. She wondered if she ought to go to the town sheriff or the local military garrison; they could cordon off the Inn and launch a raid inside. The killings had disrupted the flow of commerce and stoked tensions between Dalen and Verden, as those wanting war tried to pitch blame on the neighbouring kingdom for the deadly attacks. Now that she had put down roots here the last thing she wanted was a war to break out. She had grown weary of them.

Putting a large tree between him and the Inn, Oruvand turned to her, a smile forming on his face. "Well, Kalena, since you were so eager to apprehend me a second ago, how about the real deal?"

"You would share your bounty with me?" she said, surprised and pleased. "That's awfully generous of you, Oruvand. Very well. We'll take him together."

Kalena did not need the reward money but she could use the diversion and some real action. Oruvand also seemed like a competent sort, and she liked his attitude. She looked off at the inn with a cool and professional air. "I think killing him would be best. After murdering nine of the Queen's royal subjects he'll be swinging from a rope anyway. Tell me, what does he look like? I assume you've had a good look at the fellow. And what kind of capabilities does he have?"
