“Who says my loyalty always can be bought?” he said, a little insulted by her assumption. Admittedly this had often been the case in the past, but that didn’t mean he would act like that every time.

Not trying to avoid eye contact with her he brought the horse to a holt. “Don’t be ridiculous. Do you really think I would ever do such a thing to you?” it hurt a little to know she didn’t trust him more than that, but he didn’t blame her. Normally it would be something he would have considered, but now that he’d gotten to know her it was a completely different matter. And this was the dangerous part for him: attachments. It made him woundable and when having a job like his, this could even get you killed.
