She pulled the knife out and he collapsed to the floor, wiping it
clean on his jacket and pulling out a roll of cash from his shirt
pocket she spoke to the corpse.
"Tsk tsk. What did they teach you? Not much of a security guard when
you let a cold blooded killer into a club are you?" Amber laughed
evilly and sauntered into the club.
Keats casually strolled in, nodding to the bouncer, and handing him
the case which was ushered away to the Don. He went inside, ordered a
drink and took a well earned break.
---- End Snip ----
John sat back in a corner. He enjoyed eyeing up the punters as they
walked in. Looking for those he should follow home that night, those
he could have his fun with before then, and any hearts he could break.
Life didn't get much better than this, but, for all intensive
purposes, he was alone. His only friends were probably dead from his
doings in stroud, and anyone he got close to up here would be a
liability.
Amber casually tossed the knife into a bin by the door and swayed her
hips as she walked over to the bar. Unrolling the wedge of recently
stolen cash she whipped out a note and placed it on the bar.
"Martini, stirred not shaken." She ordered the bartender. Even in the
year 2104 they have them, a chav sat next to her eyed her up.
"Nice contacts duck." He said reaching and grabbing her ass. Amber
grabbed his wrist and twisted slightly.
"Get off em punk." She growled.
John sighted a strangely attractive young lady enter the bar, by eye
she was 17-20, depending how many jobs or lifts shed had. He decided
to keep his eyes on her. She looked like somewhat of a predator, and
although not normally his type, there was something about her... the
way she moved, that said to him that she wasn't just eye candy, but
had probably seen a few fights in her time. The way she was calm in a
rough area, wearing little and being alone. He kept his eyes open, he
could tell things would be interesting, and lit up a Rollie, revealing
his face in the shadow for a fraction of a second.
The chav was persistent, not getting the message, and as Amber downed
her second double vodka he chanced another grab at her. This time she
wasn't so nice. Amber stood up grabbed his arm and twisted it,
throwing the man off his stool and onto the floor with a crack as his
arm broke that was audible over the thumping music. She sat back down
on her stool ignoring the groaning drunkard and ordered again. John
smiled. Not because he thought it was humorous to beat on the
low-life's, but more because he was right, she could handle herself.
He took a drag on the Rollie, stubbed it out, caught the bar-tenders
eye and nodded slightly.
"The drinks en-gratis tonight it seems"
"What?"
"Your drinks, don't worry about the cost"
She followed the trail of the bartenders sight to where John was sitting.
"I wont have my drinks brought for me by some weird ass pervert!" She
slammed down a wedge of cash and went to where John was sitting,
sipping a Cuba Libra. Even in the dim, wavering light from the dance
floor Amber could make out the face of John Keats as she drew closer
to him.
"You?! You persistent smeg. You don't give up do you! I told you to
beat it already once this lifetime." She snapped, refusing to take the
seat he offered her.
"Ok, that was surreal... do i look like someone you know?"
"Heh... don't think I'm stupid, i know who you are John. Your John
Keats, lame ass pilot extradinare!"
"Well, ignoring the obvious point, which is how do you know my name,
I shall ask you, how did you know that i can pilot? Hell, Ive never
touched a plane since I.. left stroud... which means... hmm... so they
sent a women to kill me."
"As much as i'd love to kill you Johnny boy, and as much as it is my
desire to splatter your insides and make them outsides. I do still
have some morale and can't quite bring myself to kick your sorry
piloting ass into hell." She spat ant him "And what's more, you seem
to be forgetting those few years you were aboard the Blue Dwarf. Those
same few years we were together. Married for all that was worth you
useless piece of garbage." Keats raised an eyebrow.
"Blue Dwarf? How... but I..." He regained his cool. Only three people
in the universe knew he'd tried to join the Blue Dwarf, Frank, Jack
and Grant. The only way she could of known this is if she'd either
tortured his friends to find out, or been on the list herself. She
would of been about 14 when that all happened, and married? John had
never had a relationship that lasted more than a week, let alone
marriage. She must be an Assassin he concluded. He stood up slowly,
feeling a knife in his sleeve.
"Look... now if your an ex-girl friend, ok, I can understand, but..."
He let the knife slide into his hand and as he stood he made a full
body arc cut with the knife. Amber avoided it, and the dull black
bladed knife merely took a lock of her hair off.
"Oh honey, you want to play rough.... You know I love that sort of
thing." Her eyes sparkled as she circled around John, lunging for him
and disarming him in one swift move. The knife tumbled from his hand
and buried itself deeply in the wooden floor. This John however,
unlike his Pilot counterpart, was an adept fighter, and as the kick
connected, he swept out her other leg, not toppling her, but
staggering her sufficiently to put him onto the attack again, which he
did, sending a rigid hand sharply at her throat. Her GELF instincts
kicked in and she dodged the blow, however in her already unbalanced
state she ended up sprawled out on the floor. Keats looked down at
her. He was having fun, even if she was out to assassinate him, well,
you never know. He let her stand up.
"Why didn't you finish me off?"
"That wouldn't of been fun now, would it?" he winked. She growled and
threw herself at him in a fury of attacks, a few connected, but he
blocked most of them. He took her legs out from under her and she fell
forwards into his arms, where he casually kissed her. She found
herself leaning into the kiss and wrapped her arms around him. The
madness momentarily forgotten. Her nanos automatically searched out
John's frequency, but found nothing, mildly alarmed Amber started
backwards.
"You don't have nanos....." She said shocked.
"Nanos? Whats that? A disease? nah, I'm clean!" She looked at him
cautiously. "Seriously! Blood check the other day, type AB negative,
and perfectly healthy!"
"You don't remember anything at all do you? Nothing about the Blue
Dwarf at all, you don't even remember me...." Her eyes were still
black, but being held by John seemed to stop her from going mad.
"The Blue Dwarf? I applied for it, but, well, it was another hope
shot down early in my life. Last I heard is that some wacko blew it up
in dock, and all I got was a letter of apology." He sighed and looked
at the ceiling.
"Still wonder what life would of been like in space... ah well, I
think I'm better off on solid ground" Amber eyed up John, he was
exactly the same in appearance in every way. She sighed, realizing his
hands hadn't moved from their position she stepped backwards.
"Don't be so sure solid ground is better. I hate this smegging
planet. You want to know what life was like in space?" She paused and
grinned at him. He raised an eyebrow.
"Sure, whats the plan? My evenings free" He smiled back very slightly.
"You know anywhere private we can go?" She said "I can kill in
public, but somethings I will draw the line at... If you get my
meaning." Keats smiled on the inside.
"I got a little place nearby, not fancy, but it does the job.
Apartment 315, Orchard Grove Hotel. I'm a permanent Resident" He
wasn't sure what was more interesting, the fact that she was hinting,
or the fact that she was a self confessed cold blooded killer.
"Well what are you waiting for lover boy lead the way..." She leaned
in and kissed his neck.
