Jack stood with his back to the wall, and placed himself next to the
door to parrotts, which was still open. He flicked the screen on
his rifle to face him, as he pointed the weapon through the door.
He could feel the anger welling up inside him, even though this
creature didn't kill Melissa, her death was a by-product of its
actions, and as far as Jack was concerned, he couldn't give a smeg
whether it'd hunted her down purposefully... He was going to kill it.
Or at least, he would, if he could see, his left eye, missing since
their last visit to earth, was about as helpful as a chocolate
teapot, and his right eye was full of tears for his beloved. He
wiped the tears from his eye with his sleeve, and moved further
round, pointing the rifle everywhere.
"It's gone" he said, stepping into parrotts, checking everywhere.
The rest of the group followed him in. "it's gone up a level!"
Amber said, seeing a clear hole to the next deck, and vanished out
of the door at top speed, everyone followed, but as before, Amber
was too fast, and made it ahead of everyone else. She had one lift
to herself, the rest of the taskforce shared one.
In the second lift, Jack held his rifle pointing to the door, ready
to shoot the bug if he saw it, but again, his eyes became cloudy,
and instead, rested the barrel on the ground, and let his arm rest
on the stock, and his face on his arm.
"Why?" he said, "Why did you have to destroy the labs? we could have
used them to bring everyone back!" Jack said, suddenly standing up,
and forcing his best friend against the side of the lift. Looking
at John, the man he'd known for most of his life, who he'd grown up
with in neo-stroud, the man he now had up against a wall.
Only a second passed before Jack let go, and with all his might, as
if he still had phoenix fire, slammed his fist into the wall, then
picked up his rifle again. "sorry..." he said quietly, partially
sub-vocalised. The door opened, everyone charged out, seeing Ambers
back as she turned a corner ahead of them.
