Pole to Pole

Trisees' heart beat faster as he watched one of the hive workers
pulled against the small thin hole. Its mandibles open wide and its
legs thrashed madly, before the combined pressure of the vacuum tore
it in half and into space.
Trisees winced and looked away.
He steeled himself and looked out of the duct, noticing a large pole
sticking out rigidly from the ground. Immediately a plan began to
form in his head. If he could jump from the duct at the right time,
he could grab the pole and from there try to hang on long enough to
devise another way out. The integrated security systems on the ship
should set in after too long with a breach, and the room with the
breach would be sealed behind thick hull like saftey doors.
He just had to make sure he wasn't on the inside when that happened.
Trisees began to ready his body. The pipe section screeched loudly as
the metal rubbed against the floor of the corridor, advancing towards
the hole. There was another loud screeching noise as the second hive
worker disappeared in a cloud of broken mulch into space.
The duct approached the pole and with heruclean effort, Trisees leapt
from his metal prison and into the deadly fast emptying room. His
jump, however, was off by a fraction of a second. Trisees looked in
horror as the pole neared, and his body hit it hard; his outstretched
hand missing the purchase and his head connecting with metal flooring.
Somehow, as the sucking of the vacuum began to pull his body towards
the black death, his foot caught on the grating in front of the pole,
securing him to the room. He lay there in a daze, a large cut
appearing over his forehead and down his cheeky, bleeding profusely,
whilst the section of duct crumpled and vanished through the hole.
He groaned groggily, before gasping as a red light on the wall above
the door began flashing wildly.
The security system was taking over and the door was beginning to close.
